Technology Can Heal

Putting Your Loved One and Caregiver at Ease

With all the technology that surrounds us today, it’s a delight to know that a few technology-based inventions are designed to do more than just help us surf the Internet. They actually were created to aid and help provide care for loved ones. These wonders of the online world can help caregivers provide a more independent and well cared for quality of life.

Presto is a printer that keeps people connected long distance and doesn’t require your loved one to get a computer. You can send your loved one photos and documents from your computer that are printed out in their home. I think this can help a loved one feel connected and included when, for example, they see pictures of family they love on vacation.

For loved ones who like to keep tech savvy there is Telekin. This all-encompassing computer already includes all applications and Wi-Fi.  The large screen with calendar updates and video chatting options is easy to use. This, too, keeps them connected and engaged.

I also learned about a device that is commonly used for loved ones who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. Popular for caregivers who need to work, Sonamba is an electronic tablet that stays home with your loved one. Its sensors can be attached in areas of the house in order to record the normal patterns of your loved one.  You, as caregiver, can then be alerted – text messages or emails - if  something unusual occurs. It also offers you daily updates and provides reminders of when it’s time to take which medications. Untaken medication alerts can be set-up and a 911 button is available for emergencies.

These contemporary solutions can help make everyone feel at ease .
