Caregiver: All Hands On Deck!

Often times, caregivers get caught up in giving so much to their loved ones that they forget to pay attention to their own mental, physical, and emotional health. It’s a stressful, energy-draining, full-time job and trust me, your hard work is much appreciated.  But how can you truly give your loved on your full attention when you’re sleep-deprived, yawning, hungry, and stressed? It’s important for you to set time aside to rejuvenate and the best way (in my opinion) to reset your gears and start fresh is going on a vacation! I know what you're thinking right now: “What if something happens when I’m not there? No one can take care of my loved one like I can.” Everything will be okay. And here’s why:

What if something happens when I’m not there? Truthfully, something could happen at any moment. It’s a completely understandable and very common fear, but being on edge because you are not rested will not make you a better caregiver.

No one can take care of my loved one like I can.  No one may love your loved one like you do, but there are people who are professional caregiver s. Find one you trust to act as a back-up caregiver so you can leave the house for even a few hours, and eventually (hopefully) you will build up enough trust that you can leave him or her in charge so you can go on an extended vacation.

Getting time away from the marathon of caregiving is extremely important. Extended periods of time without rest can add to feelings of responsibility and self-sacrifice that can generate resentment anxiety, and guilt. None of these are conducive to making good decisions when choices have to be made.

If you're ready to take a vacation, then look into the Home Instead Senior Care Caregiver Cruise Giveaway Contest. The lucky winner will win a free $4,200 cruise package which includes a 5-day cruise to the Bahamas, free transportation to and from the cruise port, and 40 hours of care from a Home Instead professional for your loved one while you are away. This is a wonderful opportunity for a caregiver to reset the gears, find greater life balance and become an even better caregiver. So what are you waiting for? Apply before the August 24 deadline.
