I thought with all those $400,000 a year salaries, we'd get to sample caviar and champain.
Al Nymous February 05, 2014 at 12:34 AM
For that paycheck I will gladly spray water on a burning house.. And I will not run anyone over to death.. So I guess that would be a bonus.
Sam February 05, 2014 at 04:41 AM
Al, You have no class as Someone lost a life in that accident .
Bubba six pack February 05, 2014 at 10:19 AM
The real hose job is what the fire board does to the city of Novato. they get twice as much property tax money as the city, run their own books, and play musical chairs with the other fire department heads so virtually everyone at the top is a double dipper, collecting multiple checks. The only defense ever posted is "who are you going to call when your house is on fire.", and "you need us". These are valid arguments, but they also apply to the garbage man, Roto Rooter, your doctor, dentist, auto mechanic, grocery bagger, and everyone else we don't pay $400,000 a year for their service.
Bob February 05, 2014 at 10:26 AM
Al Nymous, would you trade places with Steve Rucker, the Novato Firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty when he was trapped by a raging wildland fire?
Roger February 05, 2014 at 10:46 AM
Bob: Many cops get killed on the job, but they don't get $400k/ yr. The Novato fire district board shouldn't consist on ex-firefighters. It is like having prisoners in charge of the prison.
Bob February 05, 2014 at 11:09 AM
Roger, the Fire Board election comes around every couple of years, throw your hat in the ring.
Fred Pfeifer February 05, 2014 at 11:41 AM
As a retired firefighter in Novato, I ask Bob and all the rest of you, How many Novato Firefighters make 400.000. per year. some times i think you should talk to a fireman before you open your large mouths. And what does this have to do with a cooking show. Fred Pfeifer
Roger February 05, 2014 at 11:42 AM
Bob: I think the better solution would be to change the law so that the firefighters report up through the City Council like the cops do. That way the governing body could better balance Novato citizens' many different needs. The cops a few years ago had some pension reform. Time for the firefighters to get theirs.

We need to disband both the fire and sewer boards and bring them under the control of Novato, Each of these groups was formed before Novato was incorporated as a city, and these services were needed, but now they have morphed into their own uncontrolled entities who tax the residents of Novato more than twice as much as Novato taxes it's residents for all of the other services. Let supply and demand dictate salaries. Lower the pay until the 3 mile long line of drooling doctors, engineers, scientists, and everyone else who wants a bigger paycheck dwindles to only a few hundred. The chest beating of macho dudes who squirt water doesn't cloud the fact that the rest of the city suffers through a budget crisis while these guys vote themselves raises whenever their Tahoe cabin needs remodeling. We need to do what Corte Madera and Larksur did. Consolidate departments, lay off redundant positions, and save money. And serve baloney sandwiches at the fire house. If they want better food, let them go to the deli for lunch.
Al Nymous February 05, 2014 at 01:40 PM
Sam, I don't have any class when it comes to firefighters killing people. Bob, using the tragedy of dead firefighters to say they are worth half a million a year plus benefits for the rest of their life is pretty weak. A $400k a year job in cushy Novato along with the corruption is a big problem.
Roger February 05, 2014 at 01:57 PM
Fred: The IJ had to sue under the Information Act to get the total pay info and that was a few years ago. You tell us...what was the top Novato firefighter's total take-home in 2013? Did the board learn from that black eye the IJ gave the district a few years ago? Is the abuse of total pay more under control now? Does the IJ have to sue again to get the 2013 total pay numbers?
PeterG February 05, 2014 at 02:28 PM
Perhaps fire could have a system similar to the military. When you are actually out fighting fires, you get the premium/hazard pay. When you are back at the station cooking chili, polishing trucks, lifting weights etc, you receive a lower pay rate. What percent of time is the average firefighter fighting fires?
Fred Pfeifer February 05, 2014 at 03:59 PM
Next time you or your mother falls call a plumber. You folks need to get real jobs and not text so much
Bubba six pack February 05, 2014 at 06:32 PM
Sorry Freddy, but I have to wait 1 month to get a teeth cleaning from my dentist, and he's always busy from dawn til dusk, non stop with appointments. Ask yourself this: How many fires did we have in Novato last week? How many police calls did we have? I don't fall for that old trick of taking two or three fire trucks to every call with sirens blazing. They just do that to keep us thinking they're on the job constantly, when it's a medical emergency that only requires an ambulance. They just need to keep the batteries charged. I'm thinking 90% of the time they're getting paid to wait, and getting paid too much. About 5 seconds after the first caveman made fire, he discovered that pissing on it put it out. Nothing has changed since then. We just have bigger hoses now. Same old technology. Keep squirting until it's out, just like washing your car. Send firemen to fires, and ambulances to people. If firemen do double duty (we know they do), then they're still only up to 10% of their paid time.
Fred Pfeifer February 05, 2014 at 07:19 PM
Never seen a poor dentist either. Is it just Novato Fireman you don't like or all fire and policeman.
Bubba six pack February 05, 2014 at 08:30 PM
You're putting words in my mouth, Fred. I never said I don't like cops or firemen, just that they should be paid fairly like the rest of us. Getting twice as much property taxes as Novato, but only providing one service, and running their own show gives firemen too much conflict of interest at the expense of the cops, teachers, and all of the other city services who must fight for the leftover scraps. Time to share. If an assistant chief can get $400,000 a year, then you should share your revenue with the cops. The city laid off 24% of it's workforce over the last two years, and is trying to pay others to retire early, and the best line you can come up with is "You gonna call a plumber when your mom falls?" We have real jobs, but we can't retire at 50 because we have to pay you to.
Trailbikerbilly February 05, 2014 at 10:46 PM
So anyone who says firemen shouldn't make more than the president of the United States must just hate cops and firemen? And must call some one else when they need help? Sounds like bullying to me. Enjoy retirement, Fred. I'm sure you deserve it, but the fire board needs fixing.
Sam February 06, 2014 at 08:28 AM
Trailbikerbilly and Bubba six pack are the same person. I agree the fire board should have two or three members who were not Firemen and the Sanitary board are the biggest crooks in this county. Then again you vote for them every time an election comes around. This city and the school board will be after your stupid ass to vote for more taxes once again and guess what ! You will find a way to give them what they want as years ago they trained you to think without more funds things will get worse. Wake up Novato One Term limit as the ship is sinking
Bubba six pack February 06, 2014 at 11:56 AM
Eight mile was a song by Eminem, not the application line for this job. Sam, you have to at least consider the theory that all of your opposers are not the same person, but that just maybe, more than one person in Novato thinks $400,000 is a bit steep for a fireman.
Cynthia February 08, 2014 at 06:16 PM
You forgot to mention that they work less than 10 days/month for those 6-figure salaries and 100%+++ pensions. Most of them have second jobs so they are making bank - never heard of a poor firefighter. Their jobs are important but not 5 to 10X more important than people who work harder, longer and had to have a college degree to do the work they do. It's time for pension reform and a reality check.
Al Nymous February 08, 2014 at 08:02 PM
Sam does make a good point about voting, but the turnout at the ballots are low so it's hard to figure out what people really think of the local government. Plus the unions are very good at getting their robots.. I mean constituents to turn out and vote.
Sam February 08, 2014 at 08:51 PM
Bubba You are out of line again Warning light is flashing !
Bubba six pack February 08, 2014 at 09:43 PM
I'm not the only person who feels this way. I suppose you'll now say I'm also Cynthia/Peter G/Roger/Trailbiker/et al. You do have one thing right, Sam. The warning lights are flashing. We cannot sustain this waste much longer.
