Novato High School: AVID Program

Speaker: Jennifer Marsh Russell will speak on the importance of engaging youth in community. Jennifer serves as the Program Coordinator for the Advance Via Individual Determination Program (AVID) of Novato High School. Jennifer Marsh Russell currently teaches Psychology and AVID as well as maintaining a private practice as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Novato. She has worked at Novato high for 6 years where she started as a Health Education teacher and currently teaches AVID and Psychology. Jennifer has been instrumental in the re-launching of the AVID program at Novato high, working with the district staff as well as other Novato schools to ensure the success of AVID at NUSD. As an AVID teacher she seeks to help close the achievement gap by preparing students for college readiness through the use of AVID strategies in: Reading, Writing, Collaboration, Inquiry and Organizational skills. She is the AVID coordinator for Novato high and has ensured that the SITE plan gets implemented and recorded to meet AVID certification requirements. She has attended summer institute for 3 summers and is a certified AVID teacher trainer training and teaches teachers in several different counties. She is involved in taking at risk students to San Quentin with the SQUIRES program. Born in raised in Marin she utilizes her connections to help enhance the academic experiences for her students through finding community service activities as well as interesting guest speakers. When not working she enjoys hiking with her husband and spending time with her family and friends. She loves that her daughter is at Novato high where she is a part of the Musical Theater program.
