A musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol,” now in its third year, will open Saturday, Nov. 24 at St. Vincent School for Boys in San Rafael. It is the third year it's being showcased during the holiday season by NTC, formerly known as the Novato Theater Company.
Based closely on Dickens’ book A Christmas Carol, this musical version hews closely to the original story. Miserly Ebenezer Scrooge cares for money over human relationships and believes Christmas is nothing but an excuse to pick a man’s pocket once a year.
On Christmas Eve, he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge that unless he changes his ways, Scrooge will be bound by chains of his own making, doomed to walk the world thus throughout eternity. Scrooge is then visited by three Ghosts—Past, Present and Future—who remind him of his happy youth, show him the misery he creates for others in the present and force him to contemplate the bleak prospect of his own unremarked death. Scrooge, now a changed man, wakes on Christmas Day to the true spirit of Christmas—the redemption that charity to others brings. As Scrooge sings at the end, “how grace redeems.”
Blanca Florido returns to NTC as writer and director for this annual holiday tradition. Andrew Klein is Musical Director. The entire cast with one exception is from Marin and includes 22 cast members including children. This year’s show will have a new Scrooge, played by Johnny DeBernard. He has previously played the Ghost of Christmas Past and Jacob Marley. Tiny Tim will be played by 9-year-old Rocco Tramonte Novia-Reed from Cloverdale.
St. Vincent’s, long a family tradition with its holiday tree lots and other festivities, is the perfect place to see the Dickens’ classic and will be welcoming donations during all performances. The Gold Rush era school is now a residential treatment center for boys.
