Mayor's Weekly (May 5 – May 11)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
Happy Mother’s Day—and not just any Mother’s Day, but the 100th annual Mother’s Day.  In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made the holiday official and called for the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day.

Switching gears to this coming Tuesday, we have an item on our council agenda that hasn’t really come up since 1997 and that is our Urban Growth Boundary.  The UGB was a measure adopted by voters in 1997 which amended the general plan by establishing land use objective, polices, and programs to limit development outside the city limits. Attempting to explain all the intricacies of the Urban Growth Boundary is no easy task, but fortunately our city staff prepared a white paper that is a part of the staff report for the item located here: (http://ci.novato.ca.us/agendas/pdfstaffreports/CC051314_I-10.pdf).

Below are some policy options that will be considered on Tuesday night.    There has been some good feedback on Open Novato, but would be curious to hear from the Patch community as well.

  1. Allow the current UGB to expire in 2017 and take no action.
  2. Continue the current UGB as written with no changes.
  3. Amend the policies and criteria of the current UGB.
  4. Extend the UGB boundary to include additional properties.

Novato Farmer’s Market is Now Open – I strolled through the farmer’s market on Tuesday just before our council meeting.  Who else had a chance to go and what did you think about the new location?

Faux Show  – Very impressed by the San Marin High Friday Night Live chapter and the Novato Youth Council for hosting a Faux Show Party tonight this past Thursday (May 8) to educate the community about what really happens at youth parties in Novato and how to create safer and healthier communities.  Photos
