Mayor's Weekly (May 12 – May 18)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
This past Wednesday, I had the opportunity to congratulate the graduates of the Leadership Novato Class of 2014.  This year’s class consisted of 16 community leaders who met once a month over the course of the year to educate themselves on topics such as Novato’s history, city government, special districts, education, commerce, and other city issues.  Also, teams are formed to work on a community service project throughout the course of the year.

I graduated from Leadership Novato in 2007, but I actually first found out about these city leadership programs when I was attending graduate school in Atlanta.  During my first year, I responded to a part time job opportunity at a non-profit called Leadership Atlanta.  I didn’t know too much about the organization at the time, but was amazed by their program and distinguished alumni.  I ended up working for Leadership Atlanta for a few years and when I moved back to the Bay Area, I looked up similar programs and came across Leadership Novato which was run by the Chamber of Commerce.  Looking back at my experience, I have so many great memories.  I worked on a great project to rebuild the gazebo at Pioneer Park, made some lasting friendships, and learned so much about this great city of ours.

On Wednesday, the class was reminded that they weren’t graduating from leadership, but into leadership—that is what the program is all about.  This class didn’t waste any time either as they already starting giving back before the night was over.  The class announced that they had donated funds to start a Michael Di Giorgio Scholarship for next year’s program.  Novato is fortunate to have this program and a growing alumni who continue to serve this community. Recruitment for the Class of 2015 is now underway. Click Here for More Info
