Mayor's Weekly (Mar 3 - Mar 9)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
This past week the Novato Youth Center joined forces with the Novato Fire Foundation for the 2nd Annual Novato Youth Chili Academy.  The event teamed up 5 groups of three middle school students with a firefighter chef for a Chili Cookoff and I had the great privilege to serve as a judge.  The students were definitely excited to serve their chili creations and share about their experiences, from learning how combine ingredients for the perfect concoction to chopping onions while attempting to hold back tears.  All the teams did a tremendous job with their chili and came up with some very unique variations including one that included buffalo and another that was served with mango salsa.  Once the voting was tallied, the team “Men Can Cook” made up of 3 middle school boys took home the top honor and the People’s Choice award.  As delicious as the chili was, the best part of the event was watching the interaction between the firefighters and the students and observing all the smiling faces.  Unlike most other cities in Marin, our Fire Department is not under the jurisdiction of the city, but instead has its own district with an elected board.  As a result, I don’t often have direct interaction with the Fire Department as a councilmember, but each time I do, I am continually impressed by the level of service they provide and their commitment to strengthening the community.  The Novato Youth Chili Academy is just one small example.  Thank you to the Novato Fire Foundation as well as the many event sponsors for such a great event!
