Mayor's Weekly (Mar 10 - Mar 16)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
Novato’s community spirit was on display this Saturday for nearly 1,000 kids and their parents and extended family.  It started around 8AM at Hammond field at Olive School as hundreds of little leaguers from Tee Ball to Majors took the field in uniform for the Opening Day of Novato Little League South.  I had the privilege to share a few words with the young ballplayers and simply encouraged them to remember to respect their parents and coaches for giving their time, respect the game including the umpires and other players, and to respect themselves even after striking out or making an error.  Having played little league myself here in Novato (on the Yankees), opening day was something I always looked forward to—and still do today.  It is also the harbinger of Giants baseball!

After the ceremony, I headed over to the Novato Gymnastics Center for the 2014 Gymnastics Classic.  Over 500 gymnasts from around the Bay Area and Northern California invaded downtown on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the largest meet that I believe the center has ever hosted.  I watched some of the level 3 competition and these girls were absolutely fearless whether they were flipping on the floor exercise or launching themselves in the air on the vault.

In just these two events, it was fairly easy to see the strength and spirit of the Novato community.  Whether it is parents volunteering their time or coaches and instructors putting in countless hours for aspiring ballplayers or gymnasts, Novato certainly knows how to give back.  Thank you for your commitment.  You can see a few pictures from the events on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ericlucan
