Mayor's Weekly (Mar 10 - Mar 16)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
Novato’s community spirit was on display this Saturday for nearly 1,000 kids and their parents and extended family.  It started around 8AM at Hammond field at Olive School as hundreds of little leaguers from Tee Ball to Majors took the field in uniform for the Opening Day of Novato Little League South.  I had the privilege to share a few words with the young ballplayers and simply encouraged them to remember to respect their parents and coaches for giving their time, respect the game including the umpires and other players, and to respect themselves even after striking out or making an error.  Having played little league myself here in Novato (on the Yankees), opening day was something I always looked forward to—and still do today.  It is also the harbinger of Giants baseball!

After the ceremony, I headed over to the Novato Gymnastics Center for the 2014 Gymnastics Classic.  Over 500 gymnasts from around the Bay Area and Northern California invaded downtown on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the largest meet that I believe the center has ever hosted.  I watched some of the level 3 competition and these girls were absolutely fearless whether they were flipping on the floor exercise or launching themselves in the air on the vault.

In just these two events, it was fairly easy to see the strength and spirit of the Novato community.  Whether it is parents volunteering their time or coaches and instructors putting in countless hours for aspiring ballplayers or gymnasts, Novato certainly knows how to give back.  Thank you for your commitment.  You can see a few pictures from the events on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ericlucan

Eric, Please build the new bus stop as discussed last night with room for four buses at once and seats for those who are waiting to get on a bus. Knock the old bus stop down and start over as we the voters are tired of looking at the old and faded bus stop that was built years ago.

Sam: In a way I agree with you in that Eric is doing some good things. I really liked how several weeks ago Eric pushed back on Mr. Frank's idea to extend the Measure F tax. Eric reminded Mr. Frank that the voters were told that Measure F was a temporary tax. On our property tax bill we already have ten added-on taxes...we don't need a few more added every year. It is a sneaking way to get around Prop 13.

Al - with regards to your question about "knocking down everything", can you share some examples? On the bus stop, I think it would be a significant improvement with regards to circulation, safety, and aesthetics. I am trying to think back to what else the city has "knocked down" recently.

Really? Grant st. for starters.
