Mayor's Weekly (Apr 21 - Apr 27)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
A little more than 4 months ago, council approved the 2007-2014 housing element after several years of discussions, debates, and public workshops.  It was a difficult process at times, but the process eventually led to consensus and an adopted plan.  Now, just a few months later, we will begin work on the 2014-2022 housing element starting with a public workshop to be held this Monday night, April 28th at 7PM at City Hall.

This time around things should be much different.  First of all, the RHNA (Regional Housing Needs Allocation) numbers for the last element were 1,241 dwelling units (ranging from extremely low to above moderate).  The RHNA numbers for this next 8 year cycle are only 415 units.  As a result, the sites in the 2007-2014 element can be rolled over to the next element.  While the underlying numbers significantly distinguish one element from the next, we are also stronger as a community based on the process we just went through.  I am looking forward to this next element as I believe it will be a good barometer for our community, council, and staff to put into practice all of the lessons learned from the last cycle.

Around Town
Breaching of Hamilton of Levee – On Friday, I joined a large handful of people to witness the historic breaching of the Hamilton Levee and the opening of the wetlands to the tides.  Video

Novato Clean and Green Day – It was great to see so many teams spread throughout Novato cleaning up our city this past Saturday, April 26.  Novato School Board Member Tom Cooper and I partnered up the clean up Lee Gerner Park (behind the Library and CVS). Photos

Novato Multicultural Festival – The festival at Miwok Park on Saturday was another great success.  Many people were out enjoying the great food, music, and weather.  Special thanks to the Multicultural Commission for putting on this event. Photos
