San Marin Sports Update October 7-October 12

Last week was a big one for many San Marin teams.  Football continues to cruise along with an undefeated record in league play.  Volleyball jump started its playoff chances with a key win.  Both waterpolo teams continue their jockeying for playoff positioning.  Tennis looks to be closing in on a MCAL playoff berth.  It is now the stretch run time for many teams, with a huge slate of games this week.

The Mustangs (6-1) scored on their first 4 drives and rolled to an easy 52-7 win over San Rafael.  Many starters became spectators early in the 2nd quarter with the Mustangs up 31-0.  During that 1st quarter, RB Kyle Chernoff racked up 108 yards on the ground including 1 TD.  QB Manny Wilkins scored on a 30 yard TD run and threw two to WR’s Grant Shepardson and Vince Cerruti.  RB Jason Draper then led the attack in the second half netting 62 yards and a TD.  On defense, S Kyle Albertini and LB David Jung both scored TDs. Albertini recovered a fumble and ran it in from 30 yards out, while Jung intercepted a pass and ran it in from 62 yards.  DE Colin Lane had 3 sacks on the night.

The Mustangs have a bye this week, and will get ready to close out the season with 3 straight home games beginning next Saturday against Terra Linda.

Junior Varsity Football

With a hole in the schedule as San Rafael did not have a JV team this year, San Marin took on Tamalpais again.  After a 34-8 win in week 5, the Mustangs went down to Tam and this time held the Hawks scoreless with a 34-0 win.  The Mustangs remain undefeated on the season and now head into the bye week before taking on Terra Linda in 2 weeks.

Frosh Football

The frosh defeated San Rafael on Friday night.  They have a bye this week and will be back on the field next Saturday against Terra Linda. No other information was provided.

Girls Golf

The girls golf team competed at the MCAL Championship Monday and secured a 2nd place finish, the highest in school history.  While falling just short of Justin Siena who won the title, the girls battled till the end.  They were led by Madi Brown who shot an 80 and Allison Nieh who shot a career low 84.  Both girls have qualified for the NCS Championship next week.  The team was rounded out with an outstanding year from Kim Grandi, Gabby Villamonte, Megan Carter, and Chloe Cheng.

Volleyball

Varsity- The varsity girls won a tense 5 set match against Tamalpais on Tuesday (27-25, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 15-2).  After jumping ahead 2-0, the Mustangs lost the next 2 as Tam stole momentum of the match.  However as game 5 opened, the Mustangs went on the offensive and closed out Tam in a dominating 15-2 final set.  Allie Kradepohl led the Mustangs with a career high 22 kills along with 3 aces.  Rebecca O’Brien had 12 kills and Sam Tong added 7 aces.

On Friday the girls lost to MCAL powerhose Branson.   Kradepohl had 5 kills, while Abby Smith 4 aces.  The girls have a big week ahead to keep their playoff hopes alive with a crucial Wednesday night, home match against Novato.

JV – The JV girls had a solid 2-0 week beating Tam and Branson.  On Wednesday the girls took down Tam 2-0.  Hannah Smith had a great night defensively and also contributed to the win with 4 aces.

On Friday, the girls defeated Branson 2-1. The Mustangs started off slow in the first set, but we were able to come back and win the next two. Hannah Fewell had an outstanding game all around leading the girls in kills on the night and a couple strong serving streaks. Rebecca Simonetti also contributed with 3 blocks and 4 aces.

Elise Styles was a huge factor in the wins with some big assists.  The girls moved to 3-5 in MCAL and will play Novato and Redwood this week.

Frosh- The freshman VB team won their match vs. Tam at home on Wednesday.  After two tough losses in three sets the week before, the frosh came out of the gate fired up and with amazing intensity and won 25-14 and 25-10.  Middle blockers Sydney Cooke and Katey Quinn combined for 11 kills, and Quinn served for nine points with three aces.  Alexis Schneider, Jessica Cyr and Ellie Tippett played great all around games for the Mustangs.

Water Polo – Boys

Varsity-  In one of their toughest matches of the year, the boys lost to Redwood 14-6.  A couple costly mistakes left the Mustangs down 6-0 after the first quarter.  It was an uphill battle after that, but the boys fought back.  Jimmy Fewell and Will Hardman played great defense on Redwood’s hole players and Fewell led the Mustangs with 9 steals.  Ryan Campbell led the scoring effort netting 4 goals followed by Louie Campbell with 2.  Louie was a force drawing 4 kickouts, two of which enabled us to garner penalty shots.  Ryan and Louie had 4 steals each.  The boys are now 2-2 in league with two home matches this week against Terra Linda and Marin Academy.

JV-  The JV’s fell to Redwood 7-4 and in a second game 10-2. Wyatt Tooley had 12 blocks in goal and Ronan Shaffer had 7.  Conrad Raymond led all scorers with 3 goals, followed by goals from Jacob Fullman, Shane Spencer, and Colton Freemantle.  Ty Callihan had 3 steals, follwed by Poh Maga, Jack Duffin and Dawsen Bacho with two each.

Water Polo – Girls

The varsity girls (10-4, 3-1) had a successful weekend at the Pinole Valley Tournament capped off with a tight win over rival Novato High in the 5th place game.  The 10-8 win featured the continued leadership of Jessica Iacovelli (5 goals) and required contributions from the entire team.  With 16 teams involved in the tournament, San Marin still had to sneak past fellow MCAL team Terra Linda in the first game Saturday morning.  The girls secured a 2-0 victory after losing to Carondelet late Friday night.  The tournament started off successfully with a win vs. host team Pinole Valley.

Tournament standouts:  Tanner Rhoades (5 goals, 6 steals), Mia Barnes (3 goals, 4 assists, 6 steals), Patty Dougherty (2 goals, 17 steals).  Jessica Iacovelli led all scorers with 12 goals.

On Thursday night, the Mustangs won another league match against Redwood.  The girls jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first quarter.  Redwood battled back in the 3rd with some impressive defensive coverage and steals, but in the 4th quarter the Lady Stangs cleared a 10-4 victory.

Standouts:  Jessica Iacovelli 5 goals and Tanner Rhoades 3.  Kelly Rose McCabe led all players with 3 steals and 3 assists.  Hayley March had an excellent night in goal with 7 saves, some on one-on-one or two-on-one situations.

Soccer

The boys played two of the top teams in MCAL this week.   In the first game of the year, the boys lost to Tam 6-0.  On Friday, a vastly improved Mustang team almost pulled out the win in a 1-0 loss.   Goalie Patrick Barrier kept the Mustang chances alive with some huge stops.  The boys continue to improve looking to close out the last 2 weeks strong.

Tennis
