San Marin HS Sports Weekly Oct. 21 - 26

San Marin Sports Update October 21-October 26

Playoffs have arrived!  Fall sports are winding down and several San Marin teams are continuing their seasons in MCAL Playoffs.  Girls Tennis is competing in the team tennis playoffs.  Both waterpolo teams have a big match Tuesday against Novato to get into the playoffs starting Thursday.  Volleyball closes out their season needing two wins this week for a playoff spot.  Football faces their biggest challenges of the season in their final two games starting this Saturday.  It should be a wild week of sports around San Marin.

Football

Varsity – The varsity football team continued to stay undefeated in MCAL play with a 54-0 win over Terra Linda.  After a slow start in the 1st quarter, the Mustang offense roared to life scoring 31 points in succession.  The usual suspects came through as Manny Wilkins, Kyle Chernoff, Vince Sbragia and Vince Cerruti all had big games.  TE Quest Parham opened the 2nd half with a 75 yard TD pass from Wilkins to close the door on any chance of a TL comeback.  RB Christian Batres also had a score in the 2nd half.  The defense pitched a shutout on the day, their second of the season.  CB Joe Widney returned an interception back for a TD.

JV- The JV’s continued to roll through MCAL play and stay undefeated with a 33-6 win over Terra Linda.  The offense was led by Brady Lacues with 3 TDs.  Collin Moore played a great game at QB. The defense was solid shutting down the TL offense.  Big games were turned in by Cole Eyler and Adrian D'Adrigo.  The boys take their undefeated record to the other top 2 teams in MCAL, Justin Siena and Marin Catholic, over the next 2 weeks.

Frosh- The frosh boys moved to 4-4 on the season with a 27-6 win over Terra Linda Saturday.  QB Rafael Romero had a good game for the Mustangs on offense, along with Mitchell Crowe, Will Batres and Gavin Graybeal.  On defense, Leonardo Madrigal, Cole Weber, Jack Coll and Sam Greenville all made some great plays on the day.

Girls Golf

Madi Brown and Allison Nieh competed as the first girls in San Marin history at the NCS Tournament of Champions @ Peacock Gap GC Monday.  Both girls went out and shot career lows, Nieh an 80, Brown an 82. The girls narrowly missed making it into the Northern California Championships.  Congrats to both girls on an outstanding and historic season!

Volleyball

Varsity- The varsity girls went 1-1 last week to keep their playoff hopes alive as they reach the final week of MCAL play.  On Wednesday the girls took down San Rafael 3-1.  After a slow start in dropping the first set, the girls came back to sweep the remaining 3.  Then on Friday the girls battled Drake hard but lost in 3 sets.  The girls took Drake to the limit in all 3 sets losing 25-23, 25-19, 27-25.  The Mustangs now must win their last two matches against Marin Catholic and Justin Siena to have a shot to get in.

JV –  JV Volleyball had a great week going 2-0. On Wednesday they beat San Rafael in 2 sets. Molly Dwyer had an outstanding night leading the team in kills.

Then on Friday the girls backed it up in defeating Drake in 2. All the girls played well with Elise Styles putting up some amazing sets, Rebecca Simonetti had some big kils, Isabella Marmar contributed 2 blocks, and Molly Lucey went on a nice serving run to secure the Mustangs win.

Frosh- The Mustang frosh only played one match last week vs. Drake and rolled to victory with a 25-9, 25-13 win.  Katie Quinn scored 15 points with her serve in the first set and had six aces.  Sierra Ashley and Ellie Tippett set and attacked beautifully in both sets, and Alexis Schneider played her best match of the season.  Coach Tim Hawkins commented that “collectively the girls played their best match of the season!”

Water Polo – Boys

Varsity-  The boys played a thriller down at Tam on Thursday narrowly losing in OT 13-10.  Down 3 goals late in the game, the Mustangs never let up and executed an awesome full court, defensive press to help force a slightly errant pass.   Tam’s pass landed near Louie Campbell who immediately put the ball in the cage to send the game into OT.  Playing without Ryan Campbell who was out injured only added to the amazing comeback.  The boys will take on Novato Tuesday night and then look to be the #5 seed when the MCAL Playoffs begin Thursday.

Varsity Stats:  Louie Campbell  had 5 goals, 3 steals, 3 field blocks.  Jimmy Fewell  had 3 goals and 3 steals.  Will Hardman chipped in 1 goal, 2 assists, and 1 steal.  Sebastian Bauer had an amazing shot above the goalie's head for a goal.  Ben Rosenbaum played well again in goal with 12 blocks.

JV-  The JV’s won a wild double OT finish 10-9 to wrap up 2nd place in league.  In the second half of a split-squad doubleheader, the JV Green team beat team 13-8.

JV Stats:  Austin Thomas 4 goals, 3 assists.  Jordan Kulp 3 goals, 1 assist, 1 steal.  Conrad Raymond 3 goals, 2 assists.  2 goals apiece for Ty Callihan, Robert Foster, and Thomas Brawley (who also had 2 assists and 3 steals).  Jack Duffin led with 4 steals, followed by Shane Spencer, Thomas Brawley, Zach Roesler, Peter Hunt, and Dawsen Bacho with 2 steals each.   Others who scored were Ronan Shaffer (who also had 3 blocks in the goal), Steven Debiasio, Peter Hunt, Jack Duffin, and Dawsen Bacho.

Water Polo – Girls

The varsity girls close out in a must win game Tuesday night against crosstown rival Novato at 5 PM.  If the girls win they will be the # 4 seed in Thursday’s MCAL Playoffs.  A loss looks to eliminate their playoff hopes.

Tennis

The girls are competing in the MCAL Team Tennis Playoffs this week.  On Monday, they took down San Rafael 7-2 and now advance to the semifinals against Tamalpais on Tuesday.  Next week begins the MCAL Singles/Doubles Tournament.

Cross Country

The team closes out their final meet before the MCAL Championships Thursday against Terra Linda and Novato.
