Varsity Boys – The Mustangs completed one of the most successful years in program history with a quarterfinal appearance in the CIF State Tournament.  They opened up play on Wednesday at home vs Casa Roble from Sacramento.  The Mustangs had to contend with the dynamic duo of the Stuteville brothers who both are over 6’9”.  The brothers, who combined for an average of 38 points a game going into the contest, were held to 19 by the Mustang defense.  The shot blocking presence limited the Mustangs to outside shooting where they connected on 10-27 from the 3 point line.  After losing a 12 point lead in the 4th quarter, Calvin Geraci hit a big 3 with just over a minute to go to put Mustangs up 5 and Noah Everly sank 3 of 4 free throws to seal the deal.  The Mustangs 58-48 win was only their 2nd CIF State win in school history.

On Saturday, a rough start doomed San Marin from the start as they fell behind 21-7 in the 1st quarter.  The Sacred Heart pressure defense forced too many turnovers and when all was done the Mustangs bowed out with a 68-48 loss.  Geraci led the Mustangs with 17 points including five 3 pointers.

“I love these boys.  What they accomplished this year is incredible.  They did something our school and community should truly be proud of,” said Coach Craig Pitti.

Varsity Baseball

The Mustang baseball team split their final non-league games.  On Tuesday, they offense just couldn’t get going in a 5-1 loss to Acalanes.   The Mustangs came bounced back to beat Alhambra 3-2 on Thursday. Catcher Thomas Leonard, had an excellent day behind the plate.  He drove in 1 run and scored the game winner on a basehit by OF Vince Cerruti. OF Travis Roberts made the defensive play of the day as he doubled up a runner at 1st with an excellent throw from center field.  SS Marcus Chiu helped the offense out with an impressive double. On the mound, Travis Roberts, Dom Balestrieri and Jimmy Fewell all pitched with Balestrieri getting the win and Fewell the save.   The Mustangs now open league play this week with the home opener Tuesday against Marin Catholic at 4:30.

Softball

The Mustang softball team is off to a great start at 2-0 on the year.  They started the year with a solid 7-2 win over Windsor.  Pitcher Hayley Gazdik threw all 7 innings and recorded 9 strikeouts.  Dixie Thompson had a key 2 run hit with 1 out and the bases loaded to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 4th.  The Mustangs went on to add another 5 on the game.

On Monday, the girls opened MCAL play against Justin Siena.  The momentum carried over with a 10-2 victory against the Braves.  Hayley Gazdik again recorded the win and struck out 8.  Paige McIntosh hit a huge 3-run homerun and scored 4 of our 10 runs.  Rebecca Simonetti added 2 RBIs of her own.
