Varsity Boys – The boys played 4 games over the past 2 weeks.  It started out with a 5-1 win over San Rafael. Marcus Chiu and Ryan Schalch both hit homeruns, while  Vince Cerruti was 2 for 2 and Tommy Mazzariello was 2 for 3 to bolster the offense.  Chrit Rudkin went the distance allowing 3 hits and striking out 8.

The Mustangs then came back with a big win over Justin Siena 3-2 in 8 innings. After trailing 2-0 in the first, Mustang pitchers Dom Balestrieri, Jimmy Fewell and Ryan Schalch shut out the Braves the last 7 innings.  The Mustangs had a big day from Ryan Schalch who was 3 for 3 with 2 triples and a sacrifice fly scoring Travis Roberts to win the game. The first triple by Schalch was followed by a double from Thomas Leonard. After his second triple, Schalch scored on a sacrifice fly by Leonard. Irv Arellano had 2 hits on the day as did Travis Roberts. With the bases loaded in the top of the 8th, Schalch came in to pitch and got an inning ending double play on a ground ball to first baesman Chris Gorman who threw home for one out and Thomas Leonard threw to Jordan Herbstman covering first for the last out.

Then last week the Mustangs went 2-0 with wins over Branson and Terra Linda.  They now sit at 4-2 in league play.  They have a big week traveling to Novato Tuesday and hosting undefeated Drake on Thursday.

JV Baseball

Last week the SM JV baseball team won Tuesday’s non-conference game against Redwood in an 8 inning hard fought match.  After 5 scoreless innings, Kevin Smith came to the plate with two outs and a runner on 1st.  After a first pitch steal, Smith hit a blazing double in the right center gap.  Freshman catcher Dawson Bacho followed with another hit giving SM a two run lead.  The Giants came right back with 2 runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th. The score stayed tied until the 8th inning when Freshman Nick Corbani led off with a drag bunt hit.  He advanced to third on a stolen base and a fielder’s choice. The final run of the game came on a safety squeeze by shortstop Jeff Walchli.  Freshman Dominic Burke started the game for the Mustangs going three innings, giving up 4 hits and 0 runs.  Tony Dial got the win going 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs.

On Thursday the Mustangs came out firing winning 13-0 in five innings against Terra Linda in a league game. Nick Corbani and Zach Martin combined for a one hitter.   Corbani went 3 innings, giving up 1 hit and 0 runs, and Martin threw 2 innings, giving up no hits and no runs. Offensively the Mustangs were led by Kevin Smith going 2-2 with two doubles and Conner McGarty going 3-3 on the day. Scott Sheron and Corbani also went 2-3 on the day.  The Mustangs face off this Tuesday against Novato (3-1 league) at SM at 4:30pm.

Frosh Baseball

The Frosh Baseball team split games with SR and JS last week.   The Mustangs got their first win of the season over SR in a 4-1 win. Jacob Pullan started on the hill the pitching 4 1/3 innings, giving up 2 hits and 5 strikeouts.  Cole Eyler came in as finished the final  2 2/3, giving up 1 hit and striking out 3.  A scoreless game was broken open in the 6th inning as Sam Leonard, Alex Correnti and Cole Eyler all had hits which resulted in runs.  On defense Jullian Villamante, Logan Desmond and John Vavuris all had great games.

On Friday at Justin Siena, the Braves got off to a hot start with 7 runs in the first 3 innings.  In the 5th inning, the Mustangs got on the board as Forrester Stearns collected an RBI hitting a single to bring Josh Garcia in.  Cole Eyler and Garcia each had 2 hits, a run and a RBI.  Cam Moylan, John Vavuris and Jacob Pullan pulled a nice double play in the 6th inning.

SOFTBALL

The Mustang softball team played 6 games over the past 2 weeks and had a 3-3 split of them.   In week 1, the girls beat crosstown rival Novato 7-2.  Dixie Thompson was 3-3 on the night and Paige McIntosh hit her 3rd homerun of the season.  Hayley Gazdik went the distance only giving up 1 earned run and the defense played a strong game all around.  The next day the girls traveled up to Analy losing 13-8 in 8 innings.  Sam Tong had her breakout game at the plate going 3-5 with two doubles, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3.  They closed out the week against Marin Catholic with a tough 9-5 loss.  Again the girls battled back and forth for 7 innings, but just quite couldn't pull it through in the end.  Sam Tong hit her first home run of the season and Rebecca Simonetti went 2-3 at the plate.

Then last week the girls began down at Tam on Monday.  They jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  The powerful Tam offense came to life and took a 6-5 lead through 4 innings. The Mustangs responded in the 5th and 6th innings though as they added 3 runs per inning and pulled away for good to clinch an 11-8 victory.  Strong performances on the day from Sam Tong who hit her second homerun of the year, a 3-run homerun in the first, and Paige McIntosh who hit her 4th homerun of the year, also a 3 run shot.  Katherine Gonzalez had a great game in centerfield on defense and was able to prevent a homerun from going over the fence holding the batter to just a single.  The team then returned home Wednesday for a day game against Justin Siena and won 4-2.  Dixie Thompson got her first career start, complete game and win throwing a strong game from the circle.  The week concluded in a showdown against 1st place Terra Linda.  In a real fun and energetic game, the girls came up just short narrowly losing 3-2.  Strong performances all around and great defense by the girls kept the game close.  The team has finished off the week playing the last 14 innings without an error.

LAX

The girls hosted Justin Siena on Thursday and battled them for the entire 50 minutes.  Jenna Tooley had 4 goals while Taylor Wheaton added 2 assists.  Freshman goalie Kathryn Ruberto did an amazing job in the crease with 17 saves. Senior captain Laura Darken was fantastic on defense.
