San Marin Sports Update April 29 – May 3

Varsity Boys – The boys entered last week tied for the final playoff spot.  They needed a huge week as they began a 3 game schedule.  After posting an outstanding 3-0 record, the boys have now clinched a spot in both the MCAL and NCS Playoffs.

On Tuesday, the boys took down Branson in a nail-biting 1-0 win.  First baseman Chris Gorman drove in the lone RBI scoring Thomas Leonard on a first inning double.  Chrit Rudkin went the distance throwing a 2 hit gem to secure the win.

On Thursday, the offense came to life as the Mustangs took down TL 5-2.  3B Ryan Schalch and CF Travis Roberts both had 2 hits, while SS Marcus Chiu drove in 2 RBIs.  C Thomas Leonard scored twice and drove in a run.  Dom Balestrieri pitched a complete game for the win.

Then Friday the Mustangs took on Novato as they trailed the Hornets by 1 game for 4th place.  3B Ryan Schalch had a big day going 3-4 with an RBI, while 1B Chris Gorman and CF Travis Roberts both added RBIs.  Chrit Rudkin, Jimmy Fewell and Ryan Schlach all pitched with Fewell grabbing the win and Schalch earning the save.  At the end of the day, the Mustangs had wrapped up a 3-0 week with a 4-1 win and a 3 way tie for 4th place.

The Mustangs close out the regular season with a game at first place Drake Tuesday, and the final home game on Wednesday against Redwood.  Based on the results, the Mustangs could finish anywhere from 3rd place to 6th place and will be playing in the MCAL Playoffs next Tuesday( site and time TBA).

SOFTBALL

This week the softball team played their final two regular season home games.  With wins the Mustangs could all but wrap up a 2nd place finish heading into next week’s MCAL Playoffs.

On Monday, the girls took on Marin Catholic.  It was a tight back and forth battle that saw the Mustangs give up the lead in the top of the 6th on a two run homerun.  However, in the bottom of the 6th with two outs and two strikes and the tying run on second, Paige McIntosh sent a towering homerun over the fence that eventually hit the street to give SM a 5-4 lead.   The Mustangs held on after turning a double play from Hayley Gazdik to Sam Tong to Rebecca Simonetti to seal the win. Great defense by Jesse Andros throughout the game at second base helped keep MC off the bases for most of the game.

On Thursday, the softball team honored their only senior Lacey Nave by beating Tam in 8 innings 2-1.  In her last regular season game at Gary Gates Field, Lacey proved to make the most of the evening going 2-3 at the plate.  It was a special senior night indeed for Nave helping to wrap up the 2 seed in the MCAL Playoffs.

Swimming

SM took on MC in their final meet of the season, as this week brings on the MCAL Championships.  The diving competition will be Thursday at Redwood and the swim competition will be held Friday and Saturday at Drake.
