San Marin High Sports Update Sept. 17-22

Most teams reach the midpoint of MCAL play this week; Get ready for the City Championship Football Game this Saturday at 2 p.m. — Novato at San Marin.

Marin County Athletic League play heats up as most teams reach the midway point of the fall season this week. Here is a look at last week’s action including a frosh volleyball title at their tournament and another solid week on the courts for the tennis team:

Varsity Football

The Mustangs battled with MC for the full 48 minutes, but found themselves on the end of a tough 30-7 loss.  The Mustang defense slowed down the explosive MC offense in the first half trailing just 14-0 at the half. The Mustangs moved the ball well, but just couldn’t find the end zone until the 4th quarter as QB Vince Cerruti, who came in for an injured Manny Wilkins, hit WR Kaden Svahlin for a 14 yard TD. Cerruti, who also plays middle linebacker, led the team in tackles on the day.

JV just couldn't get things going against Marin Catholic on Saturday, falling 35-6. After falling behind 28-0, the Mustangs appeared to cut the lead to 28-7 when QB Jeff Walchli hit RB Jason Draper on a screen pass which Draper ran 60 yards for the score. But in a day of missed opportunities, the play was called back on a penalty. WR Tommy Doherty had San Marin's only touchdown, catching a nice pass from Walchli and eluding multiple defenders for the score. The Mustangs take on crosstown rival Novato this Saturday at 11:30 at SM.

Frosh Football

The frosh boys lost 28-7 to MC on Saturday.  RB Ryan Uluilakepa had the lone Mustang TD on a 5 yard run opened up off the side by OT Anthony Balestreri.  Novato comes across town on Saturday at 9:30 AM.

Volleyball

Varsity- The Mustangs took on Branson and Drake last week.  On Wednesday, the Mustangs fell to Branson 3-0 (20-25, 8-25, 13-25).  Jenna Sudlow led the Mustangs with 6 kills.  Kristin Robinson added 4 kills and 2 blocks, Megan Franz had 5 kills, and setter Casey Cunningham had 18 assists.

On Friday, the girls took on Drake and lost a tough 5 set match (25-18, 25-17, 16-25, 20-25, 9-15).  After taking the first two sets, Drake stole momentum in the third set.  The two teams played a wild fourth set, as both teams mounted big runs, but Drake held on the win the fourth.  Drake took a big lead in the fifth set, and held on to win the match.  For the Mustangs, Jenna Sudlow finished with 15 kills and 2 blocks, Kristin Robinson had 6 kills and 4 blocks, Megan Franz had 7 kills, and Casey Cunningham had 34 assists.

The Mustangs at 2-2 in league play currently stand in 5th place.  They have big matches this week with Justin Siena and Terra Linda, who are both in a tie for 6th place.

JV – The JV’s beat Branson and Drake last week to remain undefeated in league play.  No stats were provided.

Frosh- The frosh VB team played Drake on Friday and recorded another MCAL victory, 25-16 and 25-20.  The team was led by Abby Smith's setting (12 assists) in her first opportunity to set a 5-1 offense.  Samantha Tong had 10 digs and passed beautifully all night.

On Saturday, the girls played in the Vallejo High tourney and took home the Gold!  Allie Kradepohl and Rebecca Simonetti led the way with 11 kills each and Simonetti added six solo blocks for the day.  Abby Smith had 27 assists, Samantha Tong had 21 digs and passed nails again.  Tyra McQuilla had six kills in her debut as an outside hitter and Victoria Maletesta was awesome in serve receive.

Water Polo – Boys

Varsity- On Wednesday, the Mustangs (11-6) got taken out by MCAL power Drake 19-6 in their first MCAL loss. Jimmy Fewell led the offense with 2 goals and 2 steals.  Louis Campbell had 4 steals and added a goal.

Over the weekend, the boys played in the Woodcreek Tournament winning two against Ygnacio Valley (13-4) and Lincoln (9-7), while losing to Reno (10-4) and Oakmont (15-8).  Hampered by injuries and a slow start, the Mustangs played well at times and the defense picked up as the games progressed.   The team responded in the close Lincoln game and played well on both offense and defense.  Louis Campbell led with 15 goals and 14 steals, followed by Jimmy Fewell with 9 goals and 13 steals.  Despite playing while injured and limited playing time, Ryan Campbell added 4 goals and 4 steals.  Ben Rosenbaum had 9 blocks against a good Reno team and 10 blocks in the Lincoln game.

JV-  JV lost at Drake 13-2 but played a good second half, stepping up their defense and outscoring Drake in the fourth quarter.  Shane Spencer led with 4 steals.  Vince Damazyn and Ty Callihan scored San Marin's goals.

Water Polo – Girls

SM girls took on perennial league power Drake last week.  While losing 16-3, the Mustangs did have several bright spots.   Captain Jessica Iacovelli led the team in scoring and provided a lot of leadership in the pool.  Tanner Rhoades was also a standout leader and helped anchor a defense.

Soccer

The Mustangs came up short last week to Marin Catholic 3-1 and Novato 4-2.  Coming off last week’s win, the boys looked to make some progress in the playoff race.  They came up just short in their matches last week, but continue to battle.  On Friday at Novato, the Mustangs fought hard getting two goals from Vini Souza.  Goalie Patrick Barrier made some incredible saves to keep the game tight.  In the end, the Hornets found the back of the net on a late goal to seal the deal.  SM looks to rebound this week with games against Tam and Drake.

Tennis

On Wednesday, San Marin took down San Rafael 9-0.  Rachel Cantor and Angela Ding paired up for a 6-2, 6-0 win to start the day off.  In other doubles matches, Meghan Harder and Nidhi Mamidi won 6-1, 7-6.  Amanda Cardy and Julia Raven won 6-3, 6-0.  In singles play, Avery Abel won 6-1, 6-3.  Christine Coll won a tense second set tiebreak and her match 6-2, 7-6. Julia Fager had a battle on her hands but held on to win a tough 3 set match with a dominating 10-3 win in the final set tiebreak.  Hannah Gelleri rolled in her match 6-1, 6-0.  Maria DeSalvo took down her opponent 6-3, 6-4.  Finally, Rachel Teel took out her opponent in straight sets.

Cross Country

SM took on the league powerhouses in Redwood, Tam, and Drake last Thursday.  While unable to win one of the dual competitions, the Mustangs did have over half of their runners run personal bests in the 3.0 mile race. This Thursday the crosstown battle for supremacy takes place as Novato arrives to take on the Stangs @ O'Hair Park @ 4:15.
