San Marin High Sports Update, Oct.29-Nov. 2

NCS Playoffs for football at 7 p.m. Saturday at Fortuna High; waterpolo and volleyball finally bow out after big wins in the the playoffs, and winter sports kicks off practices this week.

Playoffs, playoffs, playoffs!  It is that time of year.  Football opens NCS Playoffs Saturday night at Fortuna.  Waterpolo and volleyball finally came to an end, but not before each had a huge win in playoffs last week.  See all the highlights below, as the winter sports’ season begins practice this week.

Varsity Football

The Mustangs had a bye last week, but finished the season at 4-6.  They received the 10 seed in this week’s NCS 1st Round Playoff Game.  They will open in Fortuna on Saturday, November 10 at 7 PM.  Fortuna finished the year 7-3.

Varsity Volleyball

A very successful 2012 season came to an end last Wednesday at the hands of eventual MCAL Champ Branson in the semifinals.  To get there, the Mustangs pulled off a big upset as the 6 seed vs. 3 seed Novato in the MCAL Quarterfinals.  In front of an enthusiastic crowd at Novato, the Mustangs jumped out quick on the Hornets taking the first 2 games 25-23, 25-21.  It looked like a sweep was on the way, but the strong Hornet squad came to life in the next two sets stealing all momentum away from the Mustangs winning 25-15, 25-13.  With the crowd wildly cheering both teams on, the Mustangs seized control of the 5th and deciding game right out of the shoot taking a 4-1 lead.  The teams traded points back and forth throughout the game from there.  The Mustang defense time and time again came up with huge digs and blocks to keep the taller Hornet girls from scoring.  Finally, Brittany Hermann’s serve sealed the deal and game the Mustangs their first playoff win in 9 years with a 15-11 final.

Tennis

The Mustangs competed in the MCAL Individual Tournament with several singles and doubles players competing:

  • Rachel Teel made it to the B Singles Final with an outstanding run over 2 days.
  • Meghan Harder defeated the #1 player from Drake 6-1, 6-1 before falling in the second round.
  • Hannah Gelleri and Amanda Cardy won their first match 6-0, 6-0 and were ready for the strong 1st team from Redwood. They lost the first but came back to win 7-5 in the second to force the tiebreaker. They lost 10-7 but played a terrific match.
  • Julia Fager won her first round against the #4 player from San Rafael and then made the 4th seed from Redwood battle hard to win the first set in a tiebreak. Julia just came up short.
  • Avery Abel and Maria Desalvo lost to the team from Drake in 3 sets.

Varsity Water Polo – Boys

The Mustangs opened as the 8 seed in the NCS Playoffs last week.  The won against 9 seed Piedmont 12-10 on Wednesday. Ryan Campbell had 5 goals followed by Louis Campbell with 3, William Hardman chipped in 2, while Jimmy Fewell and Sebastian Bauer had 1 apiece.  Louis Campbell helped us gain man-advantage plays in drawing an amazing 5 ejections against Piedmont.  He along with Jimmy Fewell led the team in steals.  David Woodfin, Sebastian Bauer, and Ryan Campbell had 2 assists each.  Ben Rosenbaum in goal had 9 blocks including a key block near the end of the game.  The win moved the Mustangs onto the quarterfinals against MC on Saturday.

MCAL league champion MC ended the Mustangs run with a 21-9 win.  Jimmy Fewell did a superb job in preventing goals out of the hole and led in scoring along with Sebastian Bauer and Ryan Campbell, each with 2 goals.  The other goals came from David Woodfin, William Hardman, and Louis Campbell.   In addition Ryan Cambell drew 4 ejections against MC and had 4 steals.  Louis Campbell led the team in steals with 5.

While the Mustangs lose three seniors in Fletcher Meyers, Jack Tooley, and David Woodfin, they return a  large and strong group of seniors next year and should be in line for a big year.
