San Marin High Sports Update Oct. 8-13

Water polo and tennis close out MCAL play this week with playoff aspirations, football plays their final home game this Saturday, frosh volleyball continues to roll, and soccer scores a big win.

Several Mustang teams reach their final week with a chance for Marin County Athletic League playoffs still in the balance.  First up are water polo and tennis teams, which have big matches this week to get there.  Also a big win for soccer and another great week for the frosh girls volleyball team.

Varsity Football

The Mustangs fell behind quick at Justin Siena last Friday and never recovered in a 42-15 loss.  The Mustangs were able to punch in two scores during the second half.  The first came on an 11 yard TD pass from Manny Wilkins to Isaak Leon.  The second came off a great run by Wilkins of 70 yards down the sideline for the score.  The Mustangs, while banged up from numerous injuries, will battle Redwood this Saturday in the final home game of the year at 2 PM.

Junior Varsity Football

The JV’s lost a close one to Justin Siena on Friday night 30-28.   Down 24-7 midway through the 3rd quarter,  the Mustang's  started the comeback by scoring twice within 5 minutes to cut the lead to 24-21 at the end of the third quarter.   Both teams traded scores within the first 5 minutes of the fourth and it was a 30-28 game with 5 minutes remaining.   Unfortunately, the Mustang defense couldn't stop the Braves and they were able to run the clock out on the final possession to secure the win.  Jeff Walchli threw 3 touchdown passes to three different receivers (Connor McGarty, Dominic Alderete, and Tommy Doherty).  Dante Restivo, a freshman in his first start at RB, did a great job on the ground and scored a TD as well.  The Mustang offensive line protected Walchi all evening, giving up one sack on close to 30 drop backs.  Richard Mahaffey made solid plays on defense, which limited the Braves to just 7 points in the second half.   The Mustangs play their final home game this Saturday at 11:30 vs. Redwood.

Frosh Football

The frosh lost a tough one to Justin Siena 19-7.  No other information was provided.  They play their final home game Saturday at 9:30 AM.

Volleyball

Varsity- The varsity girls went 1-1 on the week.  The first match on Wednesday saw them take on 3rd place Novato.  The Mustangs almost stole the first set up 22-20 before falling 23-25.  Novato then sieged control finishing off the sweep 15-25, 11-25.  Jenna Sudlow led the Mustangs with 7 kills, 2 blocks, and 4 digs.

On Friday, the Mustangs rebounded with a win over San Rafael 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-16).  Jenna Sudlow and Kristin Robinson led the girls in kills with 10 and 9 each.  Casey Cunningham added 12 assists on the night.

Then on Saturday, the girls placed 2nd in the silver division at the NorCal Tourney. They finished 4-2 overall,  with wins over West (Tracy)2-1 , Burton 2-0, Lincoln 2-1, and again West (Tracy) 2-1 in semi- finals.

JV- The girls take on Tam and Branson this week with just two weeks to go in the season.  No info from last week was provided.

Frosh- The SM Frosh continue their stellar season going 3-0 last week and improving to 13-3 for the season.
The Girls beat Marin Catholic on Monday 2-1, San Rafael on Wednesday 2-0 and Novato on Friday 2-1.  Setter Abby Smith led the offense again and had 36 assists for the week.  Sammie Tong once again passed well and dug any ball hit her direction.

Ariel Dunbar had two huge kills in the match against Novato and Allie Kradepohl was on fire hitting from the outside vs. MC.  Brianna Masarweh, Smith and Tong continued their hot serving with 19 aces combined and Rebecca Simonetti had seven blocks and 13 kills for the week.  Hannah Fewell played defensive specialist against Novato and passed and dug incredibly well.

Water Polo – Boys

Varsity- The varsity lost to Tam 8-3.  In the match, Ryan Campbell had 2 goals and Jimmy Fewell added 1.  Campbell also had 4 steals followed by 3 a piece from Fewell and Will Hardman.  The boys have two big matches this week in a do or die week for a spot in the MCAL Playoffs.  They take on Marin Academy on Tuesday at 7 PM and crosstown rival Novato in what could be for the final spot at 7 PM on Wednesday.  Both matches will be at Novato HS Pool.

JV-  The JV’s won another thriller 10-8.  Jack Hance led the Mustangs with 4 goals and 3 steals.  Vince Damazyn & Jeremy Nuyens led the defense with 4 steals and 3 steals respectively. Justin Thompson, Shane Spencer, and Ross Allen added goals while Thompson also contributed 2 assists.

Water Polo – Girls

The girls still have a shot at the last playoff spot, as they close out the season this week with 2 matches both at the Novato HS pool.  The first is against Marin Academy on Tuesday at 5 PM.  Then they will take on Novato at 5 PM on Wednesday.

Soccer

The Mustangs got their second win of the year in a thrilling 2-1 win over San Rafael on Wednesday.   SM’s leading scorer, Vini Souza, found the net again early in the first half and the defense repeatedly denied SR scoring opportunities in the second half.  The defense was keyed by some huge clears by Cameron Sheron, Josh Miller, Manny LaCarrubba, and Pedro Romero.  Goalie Patrick Barrier time and time again had huge saves to keep the Bulldogs scoreless.  With just over a minute left, Vini Souza got free on a breakaway and just tipped a shot past the goalie to give SM an insurmountable 2-0 lead.  SM closes out the season this week at Justin Siena and Marin Catholic.

Tennis

With home court advantage in the playoffs on the line, the lost a tough 5-4 match to Justin Siena. Julia Fager played a great match after starting down 1-4. She came back and posted a 6-4, 7-6 victory. Amanda Cardy and Julia Raven won easily 6-1, 6-0. Angela Ding, back from a sprained ankle, played well as she and Rachel Cantor also won 6-1, 6-0. Avery Abel and Nidhi Mamidi squeezed out a third set tie break win.  The Mustangs play their final home match of the season against Marin Catholic on Tuesday at 3:30, as they wait to see the MCAL Playoff pairings for next week.

Cross Country

The Mustangs did not have a race this past week.  They are up at Justin Siena on Thursday; then close out the season with a final home meet on Thursday, Oct. 25 vs. Terra Linda.

I agree. I'm not liking the new format. It's harder to navigate. I'm bummed b/c it used to be myRead More go to site for Novato news.

Thankful for Moylan's Brewing, and their commitment to the community. Support locally owned businessRead More first in Novato.

This new site is great . I wonder if the Posters who wanted to run the old Patch site with allRead More the phony garbage/ postings are sneaking a peak to see a new / better patch . They all complained and said they will quit if not changed back. Guess what folks We have always told you if you want change you need to get out of your computers face and take action . We did just that and look at our reward, A new site for regular people who have common sense .. Thank You Patch

I love the new delete button. It is a welcome feature. Now I really feel like I am writing my ownRead More blog. Thank you Novato Patch.

Making us start over is the plan to wear us down. Free press is paid for by advertisers, andRead More pressure is put out to stifle stories. That's what the tobacco industry did to 60 Minutes, and the Isreli government did to the Goldberg Report. The United Nations couldn't put out the story of mass genocide of the Palestinian people, and we'll be kicked off the blog soon because we don't advertise.

Craig I thought I was being overly suspicious but the new site eliminated months of research andRead More commentary and has replaced it with irrelevant banter and Ads. It won't even let you edit thoughts into smaller blocks or comment directly to another post. It is the ultimate dumbing down of Patch. If you have been following the Plan Bay Area debate here is a link to the response from the Supervisor's: http://www.marincounty.org/Main/~/media/Files/MarinGov/Board%20Actions/20130514CDAPlanBayArea-LTR.pdf There is also a presentation by the Marin Economic Forum on Plan Bay Area: Is it good for the region? Is it good for Marin? Calendar: Novato Community Alliance Title: Marin Economic Forum on Plan Bay Area Date: 30.05.2013 18:30 - 20:30 Location: Board of Supervisors' chambers at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael " A forum sponsored by the Marin Economic Forum on the Plan Bay Area will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 30th in the Board of Supervisors' chambers at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael. Panelists will be Plan Bay Area proponents Marin Supervisor Steve Kinsey; Napa County Supervisor Mark Luce, president of ABAG; and critics Randal O'Toole of the Cato Institute, author of "Gridlock"; and Thomas Rubin, an Oakland-based transportation consultant and former chief financial officer of the Southern California Rapid Transit District. Moderator will be Marin Superior Court Judge Verna Adams. Admission is free."

We got sold down the river by the developers. Under the guise of a new improved format, they justRead More erased our history. Now we have to start defending our town all over again, while they are already in gear. Some of the opponants of AH can't get on anymore. Brent would not have allowed this to happen. Maybe that's why he left so suddenly, and unexpectedly.
Tina McMillan May 17, 2013 at 11:41 am
Peter I am not sure which group you are referring to. I belong to Novato Community Alliance andRead More Novato Homeowners Association. Both are grassroots groups working with local government to ask much needed questions regarding Plan Bay Area. Your comments are reminiscent of a previous poster named Bud Lite who was engaged in heated exchanges. Since his name continued to evolve it was only his message that made him recognizable. No one can give you the world but NCA and NHA are both resources that can provide information and discussion of important local issues.
Peter May 17, 2013 at 11:28 am
Hello, It took our groups letters to get the change as we do not want to read someones garbageRead More that takes twenty posts to say one thing . I have never had a heated exchange with you but I can tell you I was sick of reading your garbage like a lot of other people were. You and your group promised the world, told it the only way you wanted the outcome to be and got caught by the real people of Novato
Tina McMillan May 17, 2013 at 08:45 am
Peter aka Bud Lite Welcome back. Its good to know some things never change, like folks that trollRead More for a heated exchange.
Tammy R May 20, 2013 at 10:07 am
People like Tina McMullin are upset because Patch is no longer her personal soap box. HerRead More decpiction of you and other Patch designers as "Terrorists" is insensitive and pathetic. That is the site people like Tina prefer. If you're not careful, Patch will once again turn in to an angry blog for the repressed and narcissistic.
Tammy R May 20, 2013 at 10:04 am
Jim and Patch...great layout change. If you focus more on the news rather than being a conduit toRead More pure negative commentary, Patch may very well succeed.
Craig Belfor May 19, 2013 at 09:52 pm
I keep trying to get news, but the only thing I get is Julia, the party pooper of Hamilton, hasRead More discovered another party. Get over it, Julia. These are not the inflatables your husband parties with. These are just kids having fun. They could be doing much worse.
Craig Belfor May 19, 2013 at 01:49 pm
Gee, big surprise! we don't get to hear about this important news, but Julia gets front page everyRead More time.
Tracey Ruiz May 15, 2013 at 10:55 am
We had a story yesterday on Novato Patch with very lively discussion. Unfortunately it didn'tRead More migrate over with the new format. I'm hoping it will pop up soon.
