San Marin High Sports Update Nov. 5-10

NCS Quarterfinals are up next for the San Marin football team as they host Drake at 1 PM Saturday. See how they got to this point with your weekly Mustang sports update.

San Marin High School football scored a big NCS Playoff win over Fortuna Saturday.  Now they get to host Drake this Saturday in the quarterfinals.  See below for a recap and a preview of Saturday’s game.

Varsity Football

The Mustangs, who received the 10 seed in the NCS Division 4 playoffs, were forced to travel up to Fortuna for a battle with the Huskies on Saturday.  On a bitterly cold, 35 degree night up north, San Marin showed up ready to play after their 4 hour and 30 minute bus ride up.  The Mustangs opened the scoring first as late in the first quarter, RB Kyle Chernoff broke free from an 80 yard TD run.  Fortuna answered in the second quarter with two scores, although a missed PAT made the score just 13-7 going into half.

The third quarter saw the Mustang offense come to life.  QB Manny Wilkins found WR Jason Shannon on a 51 yard TD to tie the score at 13.  San Marin caught Fortuna offguard on the kickoff and recovered a squib kick.  Two plays later, Wilkins again found Shannon for a 15 yard TD.  The PAT was no good to make the score 19-13 which stood after three quarters.

Fortuna answered the Mustang scores with a 37 yard completion on a 4th and 15 to tie the game up at 19-19, as both teams kicking games struggled on the cold night to converted their PATs.  Both team’s defenses had big stops trading back to back possessions.  With just over 4 minutes remaining, San Marin got the ball at the Fortuna 45 yard line.  Kaden Svahlin came up with an incredible one-handed catch on a big 4th down play.  Wilkins then got loose down the sideline for a 20 yard gain giving the Mustangs the ball at the 2 yard line with just over 30 seconds left.  Chris Gorman, normal lineman who becomes their goaline specialist, plunged in for the go ahead score and the Mustangs had secured the upset win over the 7 seeded Huskies.

Wilkins had a huge night both in the air and on the ground.  He went 12-21 for 255 yard and 2 TDs, while also running for 90 yards.  Shannon caught 6 of those passes for 148 yards and 2 TDs.

Now San Marin takes on Drake this weekend, which upset the 2 seed Valley Christian on Friday.  The 15 seeded Pirates upset win makes San Marin the higher seed, and sets up the first home playoff game since 2006.  The game is a rematch of a week 4 battle at Drake in which San Marin pulled out a come from behind win 23-21.  San Marin scored 2 touchdowns in the last 4:30 to escape with a win.  Nobody realized how big the win would be 7 weeks later.   If the Mustangs had lost that game, they would not have qualified for the playoffs.   Now, they stand 2 wins away from a berth in the NCS Title Game.  San Marin closed the season with 3 big wins and is playing their best football at the right time of the year.  Drake will certainly be pumped for the rematch to enact some revenge from the week 4 loss.  Kickoff is at 1 PM at San Marin this Saturday, November 17.

BASKETBALL – GIRLS & BOYS

Both the girls and boys programs begin play this week with scrimmages scheduled.  The girls will play at Vintage on Thursday and Marin Catholic on Saturday.  The boys take on Windsor Saturday at San Marin after the football game.  Both teams will be in action over the Thanksgiving Week with multiple games on tap.

Brent - I've been meaning to give these updates from Craig a "thumbs up" all fall - and wiil do so now. That there have been so few comments on them and no similar update about NHS sports seems to confirm what you've been telling me; that there is a very small audience for high school sports. Still - it's appreciated here.

I don't think there is a small audience for high school sports. I understand that providing content on a regular basis on Patch is difficult. Mr. Ainsworth has to handle far too much and perhaps there aren't enough volunteers to provide updates/articles on high school sports. Perhaps a journalism student from either SM or Novato could take the reigns in providing coverage of high school sports. I doubt it pays anything but the experience, exposure that Patch could provide a young Gwenn Knapp or Scott Ostler (examples) would benefit both the writer and the many that have Patch saved as a favorite in their browser.
There IS a big interest in high school sports. The perception may be that not enough care but that is mainly because the Marin IJ and the Novato Advance do such a poor job.

Both comments are much appreciated. John, you've been aching for more prep sports coverage ever since your son Chris starred for San Marin's championship basketball team. Mark, it's true that covering a city like this with very little help is a daunting task. That's where Craig's blog comes in. The red carpet is rolled out to anybody to create such a blog to reach the Patch readership. Novato High has been invited to do the same. Interest as been expressed in doing it but so far no follow through. I retain hope that we'll have a weekly Hornet report at some point.

As the former sports editor at the Marin IJ, I have to reiterate that I love high school sports and wish I could cover it. Doing it fairly — showcasing not just football but cross country and lacrosse and every sport — has to be done by a full team, not one person. Especially when we have two public high schools in town. There's no way to do it fairly and there isn't the personnel to have paid professional help. However, any team can create a blog on Novato Patch and reach our thousands of daily readers. I've invited youth soccer, youth football, private club teams and the high schools to create blogs, but very few have taken advantage. The door is wide open!

This was emailed to me by someone who attended. So many Bay Area Residents oppose Governments PlanRead More Bay Area.

Susan thank you for posting this. Chris Pareja is an articulate speaker whose message needs to beRead More acknowledged. While community activists claim Plan Bay Area is the answer Chris uses their own statistics to point out how little is accomplished and the real hypocrisy behind advocates claims that it will provide "equity". Chris attended the Plan Bay Area Debate at the Civic Center and spoke there as well. Kinsey completely ignored his comments and kept repeating the party line: Plan Bay Area is the only answer we have so it is "good enough." Anyone who hasn't yet should take the time to watch the debate as it is a real eye opener. Kinsey's responses are quite disconcerting if he is being touted as the local expert on Plan Bay Area. I was shocked by how little he seems to understand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOE7Hyd5B40&feature=youtu.be

Which is a fair assumption since my name and face are on it for now. Sorry for the confusion. In theRead More interim, I am more than happy to answer questions or address any concerns about the new design or our coverage of the community.
Tina McMillan June 17, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Jim What is the best way to reach you with questions and offers of help? If there is a way toRead More personalize each Patch to its community that would make a huge difference. Brent would post news articles as the primary focus. The comparison to a "penny saver" is the biggest problem with the new design. It does not favor news which is what many people are interested in. If San Rafael Patch is hosting the Plan Bay Area articles then doesn't it make sense to cross post them to Novato's front page too? Looking for news was never a problem with the old Patch, now finding the news in the middle of the garage sales, ads for businesses and announcements is where many people are stuck. It's unfortunate that Back Bay is the old design. It means corporate is throwing out what was the best of Patch. Is there anyone to write to, to suggest that the changes in format are not supportive of a online news source?
