San Marin High Sports Update Jan. 21-26

MCAL Basketball has 2 weeks left and both varsity teams are looking at playoff berths on the horizon with a big 3 game week ahead. Wrestling had 2 big tournaments last weekend with good results.

With two weeks left in MCAL basketball, both San Marin High boys and girls teams currently sit in fourth place with the top six getting into the playoffs.  A big three-game week ahead will determine their fate.  Wrestling gets ready for their final meets as the MCAL Tournament is just around the corner.

BASKETBALL – GIRLS & BOYS

Varsity Boys – The boys went 1-1 on the week and moved their MCAL record to 5-4 (4th place) and 13-8 overall.

On Tuesday, the boys lost at Terra Linda 52-45.  A cold shooting night doomed the Mustangs as they hit just 4-22 3 pointers on the night, and shot 32% overall.  Calvin Geraci led the Mustangs with 14 points, while Jason Reyff added 13.  Geraci hit three 3’s in the 4th quarter to narrow TL’s 12 point lead to 5 at 44-39 but that was as close as the Mustangs would get.

On Thursday, the boys traveled up to Justin Siena as both teams entered the night tied at 4-4 in 4th place.  The Mustangs came out with an inspired effort and led wire to wire.  Noah Everly led the Mustangs with 18 points including 6 straight free throws in the last 2 minutes of the game to ice it.  Manny Wilkins pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out 6 assists on the night.

The boys have a big 3 game week ahead starting with a huge battle Tuesday at home vs. 3rd place Branson who sits just one game ahead in the standings.  Thursday the boys travel to Redwood, and then they close out the week Saturday at Drake.  All games tip at 7:30.

JV Boys-  The boys went 1-1 on the week moving their MCAL record to 3-6.  Against TL on Tuesday Taylor Myers scored a career high 33 points.  He hit 10 shots including three 3 pointers, and made 10 free throws on the night to give the Mustangs a big 72-60 win.  On Thursday the boys came up just short against Justin Siena.  A cold shooting night doomed the Mustangs who battled to close the gap to 3 in the final minutes after trailing the entire game.  Jeff Walchli, Chris Nilsen, Yazen Hamami, and Lucas Hassett led the effort.

Frosh Boys-  The frosh boys continued to roll as they won two more last week with wins over Terra Linda and Justin Siena.

Josh Garcia played great in both games coming up with some big rebounds and needed points.  Tommy Sanz did an awesome job of leading the team from the point dishing out 8 assists combined with 6 steals.  The team has gotten good consistent play from Dominic Burke, Jeremiah Watts and Jacob Pullan.

Varsity Girls-  The girls went 1-1 last week to improve to 5-4 in MCAL moving them into 4th place.

The week started with a blowout win at TL as the girls won 57-16.  10 girls got into the scoring column led by Kaleah Williams 13.  Aziza Ramadan, Erica Gonzalez, and Hailey Baker gave the Mustangs 15 points off the bench and excellent defense.

On Thursday, the Mustangs lost to 1st place Justin Siena 59-42. Kaleah Williams had 12 points and Haley Nicolini chipped in 9 to keep the Mustangs in the game, but the Braves pulled away with a big 2nd quarter.

The girls have a big week ahead as Tuesday and Thursday they play back to back showdowns with huge playoff implications.  Branson comes up to SM Tuesday just a game back of the girls and on Thursday the girls travel to 3rd place Redwood who is just a game ahead.  The week closes out on Saturday with a game at Drake.  All games start at 6 PM.

JV Girls- The girls went 1-1 on the week.  On Tuesday, they rolled through TL winning 45-13.  Christine Coll had a very good shooting night, scoring 8 with her outside shot. Natalie Dybeck and Camille Milliner played excellent defense.  On Thursday, the girls ran into undefeated Justin Siena who was just too much.  Patty Dougherty had good game and was the Mustang’s leading scorer.

Frosh Girls-  The girls went 2-0 last week.  They dominated against TL 48-19.  Everyone contributed the effort and chipped in on both ends of the floor.  On Thursday,  the girls won a great game against Justin Siena 32-30. Hannah Fewell had 11 points in the game.

Wrestling

While on a bye for MCAL play, the wrestlers competed at 2 local tournaments.  At Rancho Cotati JV Tournament, Jason Draper took 1st place for his excellent day on the mat.  Then on Saturday at San Rafael in the Pound Tournament, Rob Smith and Sebastian Swetland both took 2nd place in their weight class.  Jason Draper placed 5th, which Kyle Albertini took 6th.  The boys head to Drake on Wednesday as MCAL play winds down.

This was emailed to me by someone who attended. So many Bay Area Residents oppose Governments PlanRead More Bay Area.

Susan thank you for posting this. Chris Pareja is an articulate speaker whose message needs to beRead More acknowledged. While community activists claim Plan Bay Area is the answer Chris uses their own statistics to point out how little is accomplished and the real hypocrisy behind advocates claims that it will provide "equity". Chris attended the Plan Bay Area Debate at the Civic Center and spoke there as well. Kinsey completely ignored his comments and kept repeating the party line: Plan Bay Area is the only answer we have so it is "good enough." Anyone who hasn't yet should take the time to watch the debate as it is a real eye opener. Kinsey's responses are quite disconcerting if he is being touted as the local expert on Plan Bay Area. I was shocked by how little he seems to understand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOE7Hyd5B40&feature=youtu.be

Hi Jim. Thanks for clarifying . Most of us assumed you were the new Novato Patch editor.
Jim Welte (Editor) June 17, 2013 at 10:55 am
Which is a fair assumption since my name and face are on it for now. Sorry for the confusion. In theRead More interim, I am more than happy to answer questions or address any concerns about the new design or our coverage of the community.
Tina McMillan June 17, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Jim What is the best way to reach you with questions and offers of help? If there is a way toRead More personalize each Patch to its community that would make a huge difference. Brent would post news articles as the primary focus. The comparison to a "penny saver" is the biggest problem with the new design. It does not favor news which is what many people are interested in. If San Rafael Patch is hosting the Plan Bay Area articles then doesn't it make sense to cross post them to Novato's front page too? Looking for news was never a problem with the old Patch, now finding the news in the middle of the garage sales, ads for businesses and announcements is where many people are stuck. It's unfortunate that Back Bay is the old design. It means corporate is throwing out what was the best of Patch. Is there anyone to write to, to suggest that the changes in format are not supportive of a online news source?
