San Marin High Sports Update Aug. 27-Sept. 1

Another week of results for the Mustang athletes plus a look ahead at this week's schedule.

Last week was the final week of non-league play for most teams. Here are some of the highlights from the week:

Varsity Football

The Mustangs (0-2) fell to a tough Analy squad 35-7 on Saturday.  Kaden Svahlin scored the Mustang’s touchdown on a 24 yard pass from Manny Wilkins.  Wilkins finished the day 15-30 for 225 yards.  Svahlin caught 9 of those for 137 yards.   The Mustangs close out the non-league schedule with a game up against Sonoma HS (played at Arnold Field) Friday night at 7:30.  Sonoma is 1-1 this year after losing to Terra Linda last week 29-24.

Junior Varsity Football

The JVs (1-1) lost to a good Analy team 19-13.  After falling down 12-0, the Mustangs fought back to make it a one score game at 19-13 with just over 5 minutes to go.  Touchdowns by Aaron Lewko and Tommy Doherty led the comeback.  Unfortunately, Analy ran out most of the clock and time ran out on the Mustangs final drive for a chance at the go ahead score.  QB Jeff Walchli finished the day 16-22 for 135 yards and 1 TD.  Jason Draper led the team on the ground again with 16 carries for 80 yards.  Christian Batres and Connor McGarty led the receivers with 4 catches a piece.  The JVs play Friday night against Sonoma before the Varsity game at 5 PM.

Frosh Football

The frosh team (1-1) lost a close one at Analy on Thursday night 18-15.  The frosh were led by a great night from QB Sam Weber.  Jeremiah Watts found the endzone for the Mustangs on a 70 yard pass from Weber.  On defense LB’s Cole Eyler and Adrian D’Arrigo led the Mustang attack.  SM next plays Sonoma on Thursday at 5 PM here at home.

Water Polo – Varsity Boys

The varsity boys (2-1) had two non-league matches last week.  On Tuesday, the Mustangs beat Vintage (Napa) 18-10.  Jimmy Fewell had 6 goals and Sebastian Bauer chipped in 5.  Ryan Campbell finished with 4 goals and 6 steals.

Then on Thursday, they came from behind 5-4 at the half to beat  American (Fremont) 14-9 .  Ryan Campbell led the way with 6 goals, Jimmy Fewell had 4, Sebastian Bauer 3, and David Woodfin had 1.  Sebastian and Ryan also had 6 steals each.
