Why Do So Many People Hate California?

Poll suggests CA is the worst state in the country. Can this be possible?

A woman wrote a blog on this topic, which was posted on the SF Chronicle site on Thursday. She said that based on a recent poll by the Public Policy Polling, “California was the least popular state in the United States.”

She went on to quote a California radio commentator who blames this on a “certain arrogance” we Calis have. The comentator said, “Californians still think it’s this great star. It’s a tarnished star at this point.”

Everyone else she quoted basically blamed the whole thing on simple jealousy.

I thought this was a ridiculous poll, so I checked it out.

It was created by Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic affiliated polling firm, founded in 2001. Since we are ground zero for Dems of every degree, I thought we Calis might have grabbed some quick points here. However, the PPP folks pride themselves on their impartial polling, so a little stab in the public relations back of California probably made them feel objective. That said, it appears there’s a huge partisan discrepancy: Dems love the state while GOP’ers hate it.

According to them, the survey “asked American voters nationally what their impressions of each state are.” Hawaii ranked #1 while California was dead last with huge gap between us and Illinois and then New Jersey as the worst states in the country.

Seriously? Somebody out there would rather live in Bayonne than Novato? Of course Hawaii’s #1 – but if I can’t be on a north shore I’d rather be in East Peoria? That’s just plain ludicrous.

This is obviously a case of mixing politics with pleasure. People across the country think our politics are nutso but, since we are so PASSIONATE about our politics, everyone hears about it all the time. (And then of course there’s the price of gas, the price of housing, the union gauging, the pension debacle, the unemployment rate, the nanny state-ism, and the fact there’s no money anywhere to be found.)

But, it is a PLEASURE to live in California and everyone knows that too. Plus, only Calis get to piss and moan about the mess the state is in. Certainly not some fool in Lincoln, whose weather forecast for tonight reads: Rain before 9pm, then rain and snow between 9pm and midnight, then snow after midnight. Low around 30. North northwest wind between 13 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

When I was in law school, in Wilmington Delaware, every time we’d study a case from the California Ninth Circuit Appellate Court the professors would say  “Ignore this decision. It’s from the land of the fruits and the nuts and it will be overturned.” Now that’s arrogance!

I am a 29-year transplant from Philadelphia and I admit I’ve been known to gloat about living here. Calis, whether born and raised, been around for a while or newcomers, gloat. And that causes a counter reaction, which until now I did not realize was so very strong.

It’s the deadly sin of envy - not jealousy. There’s a whole body of rhetoric differentiating the exact emotion of envy (I want what you have) vs. jealousy (I don’t want you to take what I have). Since we Calis don’t want to take anything from anyone in Trenton, it all just boils down to envy.

Oh and by the way, the woman who posted the blog works out of the Washington D.C. bureau – and the polling firm is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the forecast is: Cloudy with a chance of showers in the morning...then showers with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce damaging winds in the afternoon.. Chance of rain near 100 percent.

Of course I am using the weather as a metaphor for all that is good and bad in various states in the country, and why California is not the worst state in the union.

However, this poll is a wake-up call! Knowing that this is the mindset of so many people makes me think we Calis really need to come together, regardless of party, get out the Tarn-X and start working on our star – before it gets too rusty to fix.

I love the new delete button. It is a welcome feature. Now I really feel like I am writing my ownRead More blog. Thank you Novato Patch.

Making us start over is the plan to wear us down. Free press is paid for by advertisers, andRead More pressure is put out to stifle stories. That's what the tobacco industry did to 60 Minutes, and the Isreli government did to the Goldberg Report. The United Nations couldn't put out the story of mass genocide of the Palestinian people, and we'll be kicked off the blog soon because we don't advertise.

Craig I thought I was being overly suspicious but the new site eliminated months of research andRead More commentary and has replaced it with irrelevant banter and Ads. It won't even let you edit thoughts into smaller blocks or comment directly to another post. It is the ultimate dumbing down of Patch. If you have been following the Plan Bay Area debate here is a link to the response from the Supervisor's: http://www.marincounty.org/Main/~/media/Files/MarinGov/Board%20Actions/20130514CDAPlanBayArea-LTR.pdf There is also a presentation by the Marin Economic Forum on Plan Bay Area: Is it good for the region? Is it good for Marin? Calendar: Novato Community Alliance Title: Marin Economic Forum on Plan Bay Area Date: 30.05.2013 18:30 - 20:30 Location: Board of Supervisors' chambers at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael " A forum sponsored by the Marin Economic Forum on the Plan Bay Area will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 30th in the Board of Supervisors' chambers at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael. Panelists will be Plan Bay Area proponents Marin Supervisor Steve Kinsey; Napa County Supervisor Mark Luce, president of ABAG; and critics Randal O'Toole of the Cato Institute, author of "Gridlock"; and Thomas Rubin, an Oakland-based transportation consultant and former chief financial officer of the Southern California Rapid Transit District. Moderator will be Marin Superior Court Judge Verna Adams. Admission is free."

We got sold down the river by the developers. Under the guise of a new improved format, they justRead More erased our history. Now we have to start defending our town all over again, while they are already in gear. Some of the opponants of AH can't get on anymore. Brent would not have allowed this to happen. Maybe that's why he left so suddenly, and unexpectedly.

Peter I am not sure which group you are referring to. I belong to Novato Community Alliance andRead More Novato Homeowners Association. Both are grassroots groups working with local government to ask much needed questions regarding Plan Bay Area. Your comments are reminiscent of a previous poster named Bud Lite who was engaged in heated exchanges. Since his name continued to evolve it was only his message that made him recognizable. No one can give you the world but NCA and NHA are both resources that can provide information and discussion of important local issues.

Hello, It took our groups letters to get the change as we do not want to read someones garbageRead More that takes twenty posts to say one thing . I have never had a heated exchange with you but I can tell you I was sick of reading your garbage like a lot of other people were. You and your group promised the world, told it the only way you wanted the outcome to be and got caught by the real people of Novato

Peter aka Bud Lite Welcome back. Its good to know some things never change, like folks that trollRead More for a heated exchange.

People like Tina McMullin are upset because Patch is no longer her personal soap box. HerRead More decpiction of you and other Patch designers as "Terrorists" is insensitive and pathetic. That is the site people like Tina prefer. If you're not careful, Patch will once again turn in to an angry blog for the repressed and narcissistic.
Tammy R May 20, 2013 at 10:04 am
Jim and Patch...great layout change. If you focus more on the news rather than being a conduit toRead More pure negative commentary, Patch may very well succeed.

I keep trying to get news, but the only thing I get is Julia, the party pooper of Hamilton, hasRead More discovered another party. Get over it, Julia. These are not the inflatables your husband parties with. These are just kids having fun. They could be doing much worse.
Craig Belfor May 19, 2013 at 01:49 pm
Gee, big surprise! we don't get to hear about this important news, but Julia gets front page everyRead More time.

We had a story yesterday on Novato Patch with very lively discussion. Unfortunately it didn'tRead More migrate over with the new format. I'm hoping it will pop up soon.
