Love in Novato

A Lasting Love Story

I envision him on his knees before her, the words he has heard from her so many times, this time chiseled into the cold stone.

She has died an old woman and he will live to be a very old man, 11 long years more - until her words come true.

Together they saw many wars and any many Memorial Days since that first one in 1868 when they were both just 22 years old.

Over 35 years before her death, they buried a son in this same cemetery now called Pioneer Park, to honor Novato’s early citizens.

Elizabeth and George Aspden must have enjoyed a beautiful life of love and devotion, dealing with great ups and downs, like the rest of us, here in Novato.

The gravestone reads:

Her Voice

I bowed my ear unto this mound

To see if I might catch a sound

Her voice came soft as whispering rain

Soul of my Soul, we’ll meet again.
