When starting a new job search, is it best to wait after the holidays?

“I would definitely say yes, for long-term employment,” said Travis Howard, the branch manager at the Novato office of .  “Seasonal help is different.”

If you’re targeting a specific company or industry, unless there’s a specific job posting up, Howard advises job hunters to hold until the New Year.

“Most employers wait until the first of the year for hiring until they have their new budgets,” he said.

According to Howard, resumes sent to an employer in advance of a specific job posting may sit in a file.

“My experience is they file them away,” Howard said. “When they post an ad, that’s when they start looking at resumes.”

Howard is optimistic about employment in 2012. “I’m seeing, all across the board, an improved year for hiring,” he said. “Hospitality is growing — hotel, country clubs and tourism.”

As to where to begin the search, Howard says Craigslist is still a good resource but also recommends Indeed.com, a site that collects openings from a variety of job boards and websites.
