Tickets are still available for an Oscar night party that will help raise funds to renovate the downtown Novato Theater. It's set to start at 6 p.m. Sunday at Trek Winery, a block away from the long-closed movie house.
The $50 tickets includes gourmet appetizers and desserts from favorite Novato restaurants and award-winning Trek wines.
Participants will be able to watch the 85th annual Academy Awards telecast on big screen TVs while enjoying fine food, wines and other activities, organizers said. There will be an Oscar pool, a silent auction and a movie trivia contest as well.
Thanks to donations, 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward the theater project. Trek Winery, which released its first vintage in 2008, is providing its facility at no charge as a donation.
With community support, the theater will be rebuilt as a film, performing arts, cultural center so that live music, theater and film events can have a year-round venue. Plans are for the theater to be open every day of the year and available to rent for meetings, private events and educational outreach programming. Novato Theater, a nonprofit 501c3 public benefit corporation, will lead the project and will operate the theater once completed.
Fundraising is ongoing for the renovation effort, which was triggered by the sale of the circa-1946 building from the city of Novato to the nonprofit group in 2011. Organizers say they need to accumulate more than $3 million in donations and/or loans before major reconstruction and remodeling can take place.
