Joan Rivers Gets the Novato Touch

Three stylists help doll up comedienne prior to Napa show.

Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers was stylin’ Friday night at the Uptown Theatre in Napa thanks to a team of Grant Avenue specialists from Novato.

Cindy Sundberg of , Clarice Rome Turner of Aesthetics by Clarice and Alice Becker of worked with Rivers prior to her show at the Uptown. Sundberg handled hair, Rome Turner did makeup and Becker handled clothing in the hours before the performance.

“She was talking to us the whole time and asking about ourselves,” Sundberg said. “She was an absolutely wonderful person, just a nice, nice person. She couldn’t thank us enough.”

The three got the gig through Sundberg’s husband, Rob, a teacher at Sinaloa Middle School and musician who serves as backstage manager and emcee at Uptown shows.

The Novato women signed releases with a Showtime film crew so their images could appear in an airing of the performance and backstage scenes sometime next year.

Cindy Sundberg said the funniest moment was when the show’s opening comic, Tony Tripoli, burst into the dressing room wearing nothing but a thong.
