Final Farmers Market of Season is Sept. 27

Not every city is lucky enough to have access to produce straight from the growers.

With the Novato Farmers Market winding down for the year — just two more of them after today — it's worth taking a minute to appreciate the fact that Novato residents have one at all.

California leads the nation in farmers markets, accounting for 10 percent of all the markets in the U.S., according to a recent story by California Watch, an investigatve reporting website that focuses on state issues.

Policymakers and public health advocates are trying to combat obesity and food deserts and promote healthy eating by increasing the number of farmers markets and making them more accessible to people, the story said.
