The small parasites are round, flat and travel by crawling or being carried place to place.

(The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has this FAQ sheet on the bug.)

According to the NBC Bay Area report, the bugs were found in between the cushions of the sofa chairs at the coffee shop.

According to Bedbugregistry.com, there have been 1,525 reports of bed bugs in California in recent years, including one in Corte Madera and one in San Rafael.
