Winter weather that has hit the East Coast and parts of the Midwest has caused 60 flight cancellations at San Francisco International Airport today, an airport spokesman said.

The cancellations affected 35 departures and 25 arrivals, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said.

"The majority of that number are cancellations to the Northeast due to the weather there," he said.

The airports most affected by the snowstorm are in the New York, Washington, D.C., and Boston areas, Yakel said.

He said that rather than delaying flights today, many airlines appear to be canceling them outright.

"Our best advice on a day like today is to go online with your airline, find out the status of your flight and what kind of options are available," he said.

No flights have been canceled so far at Oakland International Airport or Mineta San Jose International Airport, but San Jose airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said Southwest Airlines could cancel some flights later this afternoon.

She echoed Yakel's advice that travelers should check with their airlines to learn about any changes to their flights.
