Health & Fitness

Because I said so, my personal path to fitness

Written by Roberta Kralj, Persoanl Trainer at Body Kinetics Novato

When I created the game of becoming healthy and well, I made a promise I would workout 5 days a week. I made this promise to myself, and I shared it with everyone I could. I didn’t have a “goal weight” or a size I thought I should be. I simply became someone who exercised, for no other reason than to be healthy and well. I called this game “I Love Myself” and the possibility for this game was being vibrant, sexy and fun! That was worth exercising for!  I was way more inspired than “to look better” or “to fit into that outfit.” Getting motivated to exercise was easy!

For a while, and then sometimes I didn’t want to; I was too busy, the weather wasn’t great, I worked a long day…  It happens to all of us; we start out strong and then we don’t want to anymore, or it becomes challenging. That is when my promise became most important. I had made a promise to myself to move my body, and I needed to honor my promise to myself just like I would honor a promise to anyone else.  And so pouring rain or 90 degrees weather, I walked or ran.  I of course geared myself appropriately, and I went out there.  Why?  Because I said I would.  Being constant made all the difference, and knowing myself as someone who follows through was an amazing experience.

Clients ask me what I recommend for how many days to exercise and when they should exercise. I tell them to make a promise or goal that is doable, and yet something that they can be proud of, its an accomplishment.  Most importantly, follow through, do what you told yourself you would do. If you tell yourself, “I’ll do it later” or “I’ll do it tomorrow,” you aren’t honoring yourself and what you said you would do.

Many people spend more time thinking about, and then feeling guilty for not exercising, than the time it actually takes to come in and take a class or do a workout. Even if all you do is throw on your tennis shoes and go for a 20 minute walk, its worth doing and you can keep your word.
