Whiz Kid: Izzy Block, library volunteer and star singer/actor

Meet a member of the Library's Teen Advisory Group and, oh yeah, she's singing "Ohhhh-klahoma" on stage in town, too

Every Wednesday, Novato Patch honors a Whiz Kid in the community for doing something special in sports (see past Whiz Kids and ), for charity () or maybe for being a 7-year old super reader like last week’s Whiz Kid, . The idea is to shine a light on a school-age kid from Novato who did something pretty darn cool. To nominate someone, e-mail brent.ainsworth@patch.com or add a comment to the bottom of this story.

Here is this week's Whiz Kid ...

Name: Isabel (Izzy) Block

School: San Marin High School, senior

Great Deed: Izzy is a member of our library’s Teen Advisory Group and has been active for four years suggesting teen books for purchase by the library, contributing to her book club (there are total of THREE teen book clubs at the Novato Public Library, including a Manga-only club) and improving the physical space of the teen section.

Not only an avid reader (“The Book Thief” and “The Count of Monte Cristo” are two recent favorites), Izzy is a singer with the San Marin Jazz Choir who plans to be a voice major in college this fall. She’s also a trombone player with the San Marin Concert Band and show choir.

As if that weren’t enough, Izzy is one of two students playing Laurey in coming up this weekend and next (March 25-27 and April 1-3). Sunday shows are matinees only.

Key to Awesomeness: In Izzy’s words, “Being able to help out with the library, improve the teen section, and spread my love of reading — last year we remodeled the teen section as a nice place to hang out — I enjoyed that."

Says Martha Kassin, library coordinator and TAG advisor: “I don't know how she finds the time but she is very supportive of the library and participates in planning teen events, book clubs, etc. We'll miss her when she graduates this year.”
