Novato Theater Rebuild Effort Gets Big Boost

Marin Community Fund donates $25,000 to rebuild effort. Supervisor Arnold's arguments cited as a factor in the MCF's decision to get involved.

Efforts to rebuild the shuttered downtown theater just got a big boost.

The Marin Community Foundation has given the Novato Theater a $25,000 grant to help rebuild a downtown treasure that's been closed for 20 years.

District 5 Supervisor Judy Arnold helped convince the foundation to take action, MCF President and CEO Thomas Peters said in a prepared statement.

“Supervisor Arnold made a most persuasive case about the project’s many potential contributions, from supporting a vibrant arts community to stimulating the downtown economy,” Peters said. “We are proud to add our dollars and our voice in concert with hers, and that of so many others throughout the region, in support of a project to reinvigorate and reimagine this vital community resource.”

The Novato Theater hopes to reopen as a community cultural center featuring live music, theater, dance, cinema with simulcasts of live operas, Broadway shows and a sports events.

“This is a very special gift to the Theater, as the Foundation does not often come into a project at the very beginning, but wisely waits until it is further along,” Arnold said in a prepared statement.

“In this case, Dr. Peters saw the widespread community support for this important asset, and was impressed at the energy and business acumen of the Theater Board in bringing this public resource to Novato and Marin County.”
