Get Out! Novato Weekend Planner Aug. 19-21

From an evening of sweet melodies and two art receptions to a Beatles Odyssey and a rockin' fundraiser for Novato Theater, we've got you covered this weekend.

Friday and Saturday:

Michael McCarty, Joni DeGabriele, Stephen Walsh and their accompanist David Shepard present an evening of their favorite songs, including “Blue Moon,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Love is Everything” and “If I Loved You.” They have been singing together for over 15 years with The Gala Singers and have performed for special events throughout Northern California.

Saturday: “

presents Shattered, its 6th annual Fall National Exhibition, juried this year by Kenneth Baker, Art Critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.  Baker selected 48 artworks from hundreds of entries to design an exhibition that pushes the range of the theme's meanings.  The theme's reference to disruption, change, destruction, and splintering gave artists the opportunity to explore the positive and negative connotations of such actions. Kenneth Baker will present a talk on his selection process, the theme of the exhibition, and its broader meanings preceding the opening reception.

If you go: Kenneth Baker will speak between 4-5 p.m. at the West Wing Auditorium in the , 503B South Palm Drive in Novato with the reception following from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. The show continues until Sept. 25. 

Saturday:

Photographer Keven Ann Seaver’s new exhibit, Streets of Hope: Soweto & Alexandra Townships opens with a reception today from 5 - 7pm at the in Hamilton. Seaver's photographs, shot in two South Africa townships, reveal a life of hardship and struggle, filled with hope and optimism. They are gritty, intimate and raw street scenes coupled with captions that reflect the truth of post apartheid life in South Africa.

If you go: The free reception is from 5-7 p.m. at the Marin Museum of Modern Art, 500 Palm Drive in Novato.  The exhibit continues through September 25. Profits from sales of book and photos to benefit Friends of Alexandra, an NGO that provides for, and nurtures, AIDS-orphaned and underprivileged children in Alexandra.

Sunday:

SingersMarin’s summer family chorusA Joyful Sound!, is putting on its summer concert and picnic event. "Across the Universe...A Beatles Odyssey” is a fun filled program featuring: "Here Comes the Sun," "The Fool on the Hill,” "When I'm Sixty-Four,”  and other great Beatles tunes. The concert will be followed by potluck picnic put on by the choir.

If you go: Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children (includes picnic meal). Tickets are available online at www.singersmarin.org, or at the door.  Call 383-3712 or visit the website for more information. The event starts at 4 p.m. at Unity in Marin 600 Palm Drive in Novato.

Sunday:

Downtown Novato will be rockin’ and pledging during this benefit concert event. Wonder Bread 5 and Amy Wigton have generously donated their time to perform live music. Additionally, the Novato police will hold its free Bike Rodeo for children on Sherman Avenue. Traffic cones will be setup to encourage kids to execute stops, yields and turns on their own bicycles. Helmets will be provided as needed. Attendees are encouraged to ride bikes to the benefit to avoid parking congestion.

If you go:  This event starts at 4 p.m. at , 901 Sherman Avenue in Novato. Proceeds from food and beverage sales donated by our generous sponsors benefit The Novato Theater renovation project.  The goal of this benefit concert is to inspire additional pledges to support the fundraising benchmark of $750,000. Once reached, this local grass roots organization will buy the theater from the city to develop.
