Quest Tells Story of Joseph with Original 'Glee'-Style Musical

For Christmas this year, has written an original musical, titled "The Hope Chest," that tells the Christmas story using only popular music and some narration. The music of U2, Train, Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams, Michael Jackson and others are featured in this “Glee”-style telling of the story of Joseph.

Performances are Dec. 23 and 24 all at 8 p.m. and will last for approximately 70 minutes.

"We deeply believe that there is no distinction between 'sacred' and 'secular' and feel the need to traffic in the arts to communicate the message of love which should be the defining characteristic of a life with God," Pastor Joe Everly says.

Everly says “The Hope Chest” is a creative way to tell the Christmas story from Joseph’s perspective. "It will bring new perspective to a well-worn but important story," he says.

The music is all performed live by a great cast of musicians, several from our Marin School of the Arts at Novato High School. Mary is played by Laila Smith, an MSA student who has been creating a great name for herself in the jazz world. Laila was named Downbeat magazine’s high school vocalist of the year for 2011.

"One of the things we are excited about is that this is a show created and performed by Novato residents for Novato residents," Everly said. "It is not simply for 'churchy' people or Questers, but it is meant to be a gift for our whole community."

It is a great time for everyone in the family to connect with a very positive message, the pastor said.

"Our hope is that we can bring some perspective to a season that can create more stress for already over-stressed people," Everly said.
