The Novato Theater Company is presenting the psychological thriller Angel Street as its next production. In the play, opening Feb. 17, a young naïve woman is mentally terrorized by her older husband and she begins to doubt her sanity.
Director Ron Nash explains the play is more known by its famous film version, Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman. British playwright Patrick Hamilton wrote the play in 1938. The film, released in 1944, was nominated for seven Oscars. It gave rise to the term “gas-lighting” — meaning ruthlessly manipulating an individual for nefarious reasons into believing something other than the truth. It is interesting that the expression didn’t become widely used until the 1970s, long after the movie and play’s initial release indicating the longevity of the production.
Angel Street will run through March 13, with shows Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and students. The preview performance on Feb. 17 will offer $12 tickets. All shows are at the Novato Theater Company Playhouse at 484 Ignacio Blvd. in Novato.
