Marin School of the Arts Presents 'Stage Door' Starting April 1

Inspired by the 1937 film starring Ginger Rogers and Katherine Hepburn, the Marin School of the Arts Theatre Department will present “Stage Door,” opening Friday, April 1, and running for two weekends.

The comedy/drama chronicles the ups and downs of aspiring actresses in New York’s theatre district. Set in a seedy boarding house, a penthouse apartment, rehearsal halls, Broadway theatres, and glamorous nightclubs, the action is non-stop. When a society girl decides to see if she can make it on the New York stage, her life is complicated by a womanizing producer, wise-cracking show girls, and the other hopefuls.

The play, featuring a cast of 31 playing 47 parts, is highlighted by the rapid-fire comic banter in the boarding house, reminiscent of ‘30s-era films. The look of the play is that of the black and white film, all monochromatic and evocative of the styles back then. The show incorporates music from the era, such as songs by Alice Faye, the Boswell Sisters and Louis Armstrong.

“This is the perfect play for our talented ensemble,” said Rodney Franz, “Stage Door” director and MSA theatre instructor. “I’ve always loved the film. Exploring the ‘30s through the fresh eyes of my students, I am able to appreciate the era even more. The eloquent, deliberate speech of the period challenges our actors to find the proper cadence and articulation of bygone days. It’s almost like another language. The music and fashion resonate strongly with them. And of course, the economic situation is very close to that of today.”

Cast member/assistant director Isabelle Grimm enthused, “The sheer scope and magnitude of this show makes it special -- not just for a high school play, but for any play. It really is a cross between a film and a play and that’s a really exciting experience.”
