Marin Museum of Contemporary Art Summer National Juried Exhibition

The presents its Summer National Exhibition, juried this year by Lucinda Barnes, Chief Curator and Director of Programs and Collections at the Berkeley Art Museum.

Barnes selected 45 artworks from hundreds of entries to design an exhibition that demonstrates the diversity of imagery, styles, and media in American art.  The open theme allowed artists to send in their best and most recent creations, and visitors to MarinMOCA will be delighted to see works ranging from painting, photography, and self portraits to abstract and mixed media pieces.

Georgia artist Jessica Burke describes her graphite drawing, Odd Girl Out as a “portrait exploring gender performance.”  The figure stands alone against a stark, white background, and the sensitivity with which the portrait is rendered encourages viewers to consider the dynamic range of possibilities on the continuum of femininity and masculinity.

Philip Hua, of San Francisco, combines a bull skull, red envelopes and silk flowers in his sculpture entitled Bull Market.  The combination of references to eastern and western symbols of financial prosperity provides a fresh look at current global economic conditions.

Santa Rosa artist Barbara Valles Hayes uses paper and floss for her 5' x 7' hanging sculpture Untitled I, an addition to the exhibition that will surely transform the viewer's experience of the gallery space.
