Novato's annual downtown holiday tree lighting event, presented by the Downtown Novato Business Association, is 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.

Sherman Avenue will be blocked off to vehicular traffic and filled with revelers waiting for Santa's arrival and for the big light switch to flip on. Here's the schedule:

• Pre-event entertainment starts at 5 p.m. (children's booths, face painting, jewelry making, crafts etc.)
• Santa and his elves arrive at 5:30 p.m. at Santa's Village
• Holiday tree lighting ceremony (mayor speaks)
• Holiday entertainment (Love2dance, local singing groups)

Food and hot drinks will be available to keep you warm. This event is a hometown tradition and a great time for all ages. Come enjoy the holiday fun!

I was just downtown for lunch. The crew is setting up for the tree lighting. It looks great! I find it somewhat ironic that below this article is a piece about Old City Hall, how beautiful it looks. When people are downtown tonight, having that great small-town experience of Girl Scouts and locals bands, I hope they take just a moment to consider what the area will be like with a 3 story office building on the middle of it.
