Weekend Planner: Live Music, New Play and Cal Game

Check out what's happening around town this weekend

Friday is the opening night of “The Lion in Winter,” by the Novato Theater Company at their new performance space in Hamilton. The comedy/drama tells the story of King Henry II as he brings his imprisoned wife, Eleanor, and his sons together to celebrate Christmas. Show starts at 8pm. $25 general/$12 youth. Runs through September 22.

If you want live music, check out two bands at the Hopmonk. On Friday Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen bring their gritty country-rock sound to Novato. The Michigan-group has been described as taking a “no-frills” approach to music, serving up pure melodies. $25. Doors open at 8pm.

On Saturday, Bay Area natives Freestone Peaches bring the excitement and energy of the Allman Brothers Band. The group plays blues and rock and features Ron Tomasello on lead/slide guitar, Jeff Faust on bass, Chris Zanardi on lead guitar, Mark Corsolini on drums, Mo Sardella on drums, Jefferson Bergey on vocals and Russel Kreitman on B3/keyboards.

If football’s your thing, come down to Finnegan’s Saturday to root for Novato native Jared Goff, a quarterback for Cal as he leads his team against Northwestern Wildcats. Game starts at 7:30pm, but come earlier for a round of beers and some good eats.
