U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hosting Tour of Wetlands

Put on your walking shoes and head out to Bel Marin Keys August 8

The Bel Marin Keys wetlands restoration project is one of the most ambitious in the country, seeking to return more than 1,000 acres of farm land back to wetlands, create nesting areas for birds, and a trail and lookouts for visitors.

On Thursday, August 8, Novato residents will be able to get a sneak peak at the ongoing work with a special outing organized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The tour will visit the wetlands as well as Antennae Field, Landfill 26 and a nursery where botanists are growing native species to reintroduce back into the area.

When completed, the wetlands will include a portion of the Bay Trail segment nearly three miles long. There will be overlooks, interpretive signs and benches allowing visitors to enjoy views of the tidal marsh and seasonal wetlands.

The trail will be built using a fine compressed gravel and will feature interpretive signs and benches.
