Top 10 Places to Watch a Sunset

If it's a clear night and you have a romantic interest, share one of these spots in and around Novato.

As winter starts to inch toward spring, the days are getting long enough to catch a beautiful sunset during the dinner hour rather than before it. If we get a particularly clear day, consider a romantic evening to take in the sunset and appreciate where we live. Here are a few suggestions for spots around Novato and points slightly to the south, west and north.

Mount Burdell — A natural, rustic option for taking in the dusk. If it's a gorgeous day, consider bringing a huge blanket, some comfy hoodie sweathshirts and picnic dinner.

Bodega Bay – Make a trip of sunset-watching out to the beach and try to catch sight of some whales, too. It'll take about an hour to get there from Novato, but you deserve an outing.

Schollenburger Park (Petaluma) — Take in the sights of the setting sky amidst lively and lush wetlands where Adobe Creek washing into the Petaluma River.

Christmas Tree Hill (Corte Madera) — If you're willing to do a bit of driving, this hidden mecca of a view is well worth the pay-off.

Hilltop 1892 restaurant (Novato) — The best view from downtown Novato is at this recently renovated restaurant with huge windows facing to the west for optimum sunset views.

Dillon Beach — Soundtracked by waves, and often rather tranquil by the late afternoon, sitting back on the sand is how sunsets were meant to be watched. It'll take about an hour to get there from Novato.

Big Rock Ridge (Lucas Valley) — Numerous trails and turn-outs provide access to one of Marin's most lauded views along the ridge that separates Novato from Lucas Valley.

Stafford Lake (Novato) – There’s a reason the summer sunset parties take place at Stafford Lake. These Marin versions of Burning Man may not be your thing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pack a picnic and have a sunset party of your own.

Sunset Kayak (Inverness) – Head to Tomales Bay for a romatic sunset kayak. Don’t forget to bundle up.

China Camp State Park (San Rafael) — Great for a family outing, and there's a bevy of lovely views scattered throughout this park just east of the Santa Venetia area.
