– Curl up at home with your family and watch a movie at home. Here are some timeless holiday movie suggestions: "The Bishop's Wife", "It Happened on Fifth  Avenue", "Miracle on 34th Street", "It's A Wonderful Life", "The Lemon Drop Kid", "White Christmas", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", The Nightmare Before Christmas", "Elf" and our favorite, "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

— If you have cabin fever and want to get out of the house, here are two movies opening Friday and Saturday, respectively. "Gulliver's Travels" (PG) is a comical take on the classic book. Jack Black plays a voyaging sailor who winds up shipwrecked and goes on many adventures meeting various characters in his travels. "The Illusionist" (PG) is a heartwarming tale of a downtrodden performer who meets an admirer in this magical tale. In lieu of dialogue, the plot is conveyed through music, there is almost no dialogue in the movie. It has won several awards at the Berlin, Telluride, Edinburgh and Toronto Festivals.

— Tour of lights scavenger hunt: If your children are young, the holidays are a time of wonderment and they will be amazed by all of the lights. If your children are older, holiday lights can be a tedious tradition. Make this tradition exciting by creating a holiday light scavenger hunt. Drive around Novato and see if you can find the following: Santa in an airplane, (see photo from 5 Things on Dec. 24), the life-sized nativity scene on Indian Valley Road, snow on Vineyard Road, elf pajamas in Bahia, a star in Hamilton and reindeer in Ignacio. Have fun!
