Sunflower: Beauty or Mathematical Equation?

Sunflowers illuminate the dog days of summer, but do you know they were the inspiration for a mathematical equation?

Sunflowers brighten our days. These radiant flowers grace yards all over Novato. They can be seen searching for the sun, peeking over fences or scattered along the roadways.

Do you know that each sunflower contains 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers all aligned in a tightly packed spiral pattern? It's known as the golden angle (137.5 degrees) and a mathematical model was created in 1979 by Vogel to express this pattern.

Amazing!
