Proud Father Elegantly Perched High

Regardless of the species, all fathers are proud of their covey.

This very proud male California quail has been proudly strutting along fence lines, trees and roofs with his curved plume bobbing as he lets out his signature call to announce all is well. He appears to be very regal and elegantly dressed in his bold, defined patterns of formal feathery attire.

Under his watchful eye, the plain female corrals her covey of chicks along the ground, picking up seeds and bugs to nourish their tiny, little, fuzzy bodies. I imagine, they are a week old and very happy to be out of the nest and walking around in the heat.

Wait ... the male call becomes more rapid as he senses danger. Excitement in the covey builds.

The female quail thinks everyone is capable of flying, so she joins her male on the fence line. The chicks attempt to fly but instead look like popcorn kernels popping. It is entertaining to watch unless there is real danger.

The female realizes the chicks are not able to fly and then rejoins them.   They all run for cover in the plants where they are well camouflaged.

Thank goodness it is a false alarm and all is well. They continue on their merry way enjoying the heat.

Regardless of the species, all fathers are willing to protect, show pride provide and strut their stuff for their families. Happy Father's Day!
