Novato Railroad Crossings to Be Closed Next Week for SMART Construction

The following is a news release from the Sonoma Marine Area Rail Transit:

As part of the ongoing construction project for passenger rail service, SMART contractor Stacy & Witbeck/Herzog will begin upgrading at-grade railroad crossings in Novato.

This includes the replacement of local road crossings at the track with concrete panels for improved passage by the walking, driving and biking public.

The following is a list of dates and start times for currently scheduled crossing closures:

  • Grant Avenue – April 16 through 19, starting at 7:00 AM
  • Olive Avenue – April 23 through 26, starting at 7:00 AM
These roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic at the railroad crossing. Controlled pedestrian access will be available. Electronic message boards are placed at each crossing approximately 10 days prior to the closure, with dates and suggested alternate routes. Please use alternate routes when traveling through these areas.

Dates and times are current estimates, and are subject to change.

For specific information and ongoing updates on when work is scheduled in a particular area, members of the public are encouraged to check the SMART construction web page frequently at: www.sonomamarintrain.org/construction-updates

Questions about construction activities that are currently underway can be left on our toll-free Project Information line: (855) 312-7444, or via email at info@sonomamarintrain.org.

Safety is very important to SMART, and we are working hard to maximize safety during our construction phase. SMART’s contractor is also coordinating with local Emergency Services on contingency planning in preparation for the crossing closure.

The public can help ensure safe project completion by following detour instructions and staying clear of all construction equipment and activities.

Thank you for your patience as we improve the crossings in your area.
