MLK Tribute 'is All About the Kids'

This is the 31st consecutive year that Novato has had a celebration of the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dee Boyd said she finds it heartwarming that young kids understand what MLK Day is all about.

Saturday evening, Boyd and will lead Novato's annual celebration in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a one-mile walk starting at 5 p.m. and the viewing of an MLK-related documentary, The Barber of Birmingham, by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Robin Fryday of Novato.

But Boyd, who represents the group  Concerned Parents of Novato, said it all comes back to the kids.

"Having children involved is really what it's all about," she said. "It's nice to honor the day and the man, but it's really about the kids and keeping the message alive. We have to make sure they are part of the celebration."

So they will be. Local students will share their talents via skit and music after an  honorary march to the Quest church on South Novato Boulevard. In addition, there will be an exhibit of rare photos that include King during the Chicago housing movement in 1965-67.

This will be the 31st year Novato has had a civic MLK celebration and, for the 13th year, it will start with a commemorative march between the Novato Police Department and the Quest church. Dress warmly if you plan to participate.

After the children perform at the Quest, Fryday will talk about her short film depicting Civil Rights foot soldier James Armstrong.

"I reached out to her, and it's wonderful that she's able to make it," Boyd said.
