Miwok Park is a Westside Gem

Especially at this time of year, the park is a perfect shady place to picnic.

The morning we visited , it was empty. We enjoyed the sounds of water in Novato Creek and the light filtering through the trees. We even jumped on the swings. That will not be the case this Labor Day weekend because the park should get some heavy use.

But if it's too overwhelming for you this holiday, make sure to visit another time. During the day you can enjoy two playgrounds, visit the or take a hike on Al Rueger's  Trail.

The museum has fantastic revolving exhibits and educational camps for children. It's a great place to appreciate the people who first called Novato home. Docents are happy to share stories of Coast Miwok traditions.

Al Rueger's Trail is fun for the whole family. This is a short hike through coast redwood trees up a steep trail. You will be rewarded with great views of Novato when you get to the top. Be sure to look for geocaching treasures along the way.

In the early evenings, pack a dinner and call friends to meet you there. Bring your bocce set or horseshoes and play a game or two.

Best of all, leashed dogs are welcome to join the fun!
