Marin Humane Society Seeking Donations

Program that helps low-income seniors facing critical shortage of pet food

It's no secret that pets make great companions for the elderly, who are more likely to be socially isolated.

That's why the Marin Humane Society, based in Novato, started the SHARE program, which pairs seniors with animals and delivers pet food to the homebound. It also provides transportation for veterinary appointments and assists clients with dog walking, cleaning litter boxes and administering medications.

But with requests for pet food steadily rising over the past several years, the organization is asking for the community’s support in keeping the program running. SHARE, which stands for Special Human-Animal Relationships, serves 228 low-income seniors and their 306 companion animals throughout the county, although it donates pet food to many others on a one-time basis.

“We now average more than 200 calls for assistance every month,” said Annie Humphrey, SHARE program coordinator. “With the public’s help, we can continue to assist hundreds of less fortunate companion animals in our community, and keep our supply of pet food well-stocked for months to come.”

Donations can be delivered to the Marin Humane Society, located at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato.

The organization is especially in need of canned cat food and dry dog food. Financial contributions are also welcome and will be used to purchase additional gift items. Financial contributions can also be made by mailing a check to the address above, online at MarinHumaneSociety.org or by calling 415.506.6259.
