Goodbye Novato and Thanks for the Memories

Dear readers.

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and is feeling refreshed and ready to tackle 2014. It’s been wonderful getting to know Novato over the past six months and reporting on stories readers care about, from affordable housing battles to pension reform and the Hamilton wetlands restoration.

Now the time has come for me to say goodbye.

Starting next week, I will take a position with the Bay Area News Group (owners of Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury News and Contra Costa Times) in the East Bay. I will cover breaking news and also dig into investigative stories about schools, local governments and nonprofits, some of which I was able to do while in Novato.

I want you to know that the search for a new Novato editor is already underway. If you have reporting experience and like to write about local issues, this may be a job for you. For more information, visit patch.com/jobs.

Finally, please keep in touch. Follow me on Twitter @kioffee to see what I’m working on. If you have a news tip, please contact Assistant Regional Editor Kari Hulac at kari@patch.com. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2014!

Karina: Good luck in your new job. I enjoyed interacting with you on the Patch.
Eleanor Sluis January 03, 2014 at 01:04 AM
Karina- thanks for your hard work on Patch and good luck on your next reporting endeavor.
Megs L. January 03, 2014 at 09:11 AM
Best of luck Karina! Both of my sisters worked for the San Jose Mercury News and they enjoyed it there.
Bob Ratto January 03, 2014 at 10:13 AM
Good luck, and thank you for all your efforts.
Trailbikerbilly January 03, 2014 at 10:13 AM
I see you deleted my comment. Does your new boss know freedom of speech is not high on you priority list? In any case, you answered the question by deleting this latest post. Now I know why you banned Bubba. Looks like they control you too.
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr January 03, 2014 at 10:20 AM
Just maybe some of the reading public wants all the news, not just all the news that is politically correct. Pictures are pretty, but facts are what is really N-E-W-S. Couldn't report on crime, could you?
Lou Judson January 03, 2014 at 11:20 AM
Nothing personal here, Karina, good luck climbing the ladder of corporate progress. It was only recently I realized that the photos on Patch (all patches) are generic stock junk, never ever actual pix of the incidents reported. That is a waste of pixels. Only Mill Valley has actiual pictures from their stories as far as I see. I hope the next editor actually knows something about Novato...

Karina: Thanks for shining that flashlight in those dark corners of Novato. You've done a wonderful job and left big shoes to fill. It's easy to sit back and criticize people who are actually doing the work that you do and you've navigated these naysayers and knuckleheads with aplomb. At the end of the day, they just want the attention mommy didn't give them, so pay them no heed. And congrats on your new job; you deserve it.
Al Nymous January 03, 2014 at 11:43 AM
Careful Biker Willy, communists have no due process and will silence your voice without hesitation.
Tracey Ruiz January 03, 2014 at 11:51 AM
Karina, you did a great job as Patch editor, first at Petaluma Patch and then at Novato Patch. Your recent scoop on NPAT stands out in my mind. Congrats on your new job.
Kellie January 03, 2014 at 12:17 PM
Karina, I wish you good luck in your future. Hopefully you will be treated with a little more respect than you were here. i am willing to bet that none of you criticizers would take on the job you did even though they CLEARLY have enough time on their hands. Thank you for your hard work and thick skin!
Trailbikerbilly January 03, 2014 at 12:53 PM
I found out why Bubba was banned. At first I thought that his last post, in favor of gay marriage was the last straw, but his earlier comment that the Palestinians had rights too, and the Isreali news stranglehold on our press doesn't work in the rest of the world is what got him canned. This is not Karina's fault, as she was told from above to support the blackout of this mass genocide.

Thank you for your help in getting the Rotary story out there. Following Bret were large footprints to fill. You not only did that but made the challenge even greater for your eventual replacement. Best wishes for a growing career. Sky's the limit for your talent.

Thanks for your input and hard work on Novato Patch...Happy New Year to you...Good luck with your new position...

Thank you, Karina, for the work you did on Patch and for your help with spreading words on charitable work here in Novato. Best wishes on your next endeavor.

In billiards it's called a bank shot, a brief, necessary touch in order to get you to where you really want to be, kind of like Eric's pit stop here. Bet you never thought it would be this hard, but the new job will be cake compared to this. You might even have time for a new hobby, like sleep. Ever since smoke signals, drums, pigeons, pony express, telegraphs, and then newspapers, the town criers have been jumping onto one sinking ship after another, trying to stay ahead of technology driven obsolescence. Someday you'll be but a chip in our brain, but you'll always be on our minds. Thanks for putting up with me. I'd like to think I sharpened your wit for your next job.
Karina Ioffee January 03, 2014 at 02:41 PM
Hi Trailbikerbilly. Actually Bubba was banned because he consistently violated our terms of service, using offensive language, making remarks about people's appearance, etc. to the point that people told me they weren't reading Patch anymore because the comments were so nasty. So no conspiracy theories here, just an ongoing attempt to keep some civility on the site. Apparently, it's a challenge for some readers.

Hi, I searched for the link, re: editor position for Novato Patch, and couldn't come up with anything. Karina, would you please supply the exact link? Thanks!
Christian Kallen January 03, 2014 at 05:12 PM
All the best to you, Karina. Wherever you go will be improved by your skills. Hopefully it's where that is appreciated!
Karina Ioffee January 03, 2014 at 05:16 PM
Thanks Christian. Nice to hear from you. Hope things are well.
Karina Ioffee January 03, 2014 at 05:18 PM
Hi Kate. I just checked the jobs page and the position is still not listed, but it should be soon. Again, it's patch.com/jobs

Karina- Thank you for validating the real reason for banning me. Trailbiker kept saying that it was my support of gays that got me banned, but after 15 posts on this topic you did not respond once. The first time he said it was the Israeli blockade of the real story of the oppression of Palestine, you deleted his post and jumped up to defend your position. Sounds like we got it right. For the record, I never used profanity, never commented on a person’s appearance, and was never warned even once, (you stated that I was warned repeatedly). My support of the Palestinian people’s struggle to retain less than 8% of historic Palestine against the daily bulldozing of their settlements is a world wide issue, and the organization of American States Human Rights Commission named it as the number one human rights violation on the planet. The Goldberg report, commissioned by the UN, also documented these atrocities, but the US and Israel, sitting on the committee that set up the survey, refused to let it be admitted when they realized that even a Jewish person (Goldberg) could see the injustice. We were warned by Osama Bin Laden a year before 911 that if we didn’t stop this mass genocide, terrorism would be the response. The whole world got this news. We didn’t, and it cost us. I know you will have to delete this post, as you were told to delete my entire post trail so others could not see it, but this will still go out to the emails of the readers. I forgive you. You are just obeying orders. You will fit in well at the new job. They also delete pro-Palestinian comments.

Bubba six pack is one of ONLY reasons I ever read The Patch or (patches of the truth)! He has always given us a laugh to keep us from being so frustrated with Novato that we wanted to just give up!
Brent Ainsworth January 04, 2014 at 10:22 AM
Thanks for your efforts and good luck, Karina.
Wayne Dunbar January 04, 2014 at 12:20 PM
Best of luck to you Karina
Craig Belfor January 04, 2014 at 01:42 PM
Wouldn't you know it. The only non stock photo is your going away pic. Maybe Woody will help out the next "army of one".
Craig Belfor January 04, 2014 at 02:03 PM
I'm stuck between two metaphors. "Third time's a charm" suggests that AOL will finally fund Patch so it can be all that it could be, but the old sailors saying "when the rats leave the ship, don't be far behind" says that this ship is sinking, and the news comes first to those at the bottom. Who will want this job? Maybe some troll with too much time on his hands, but do we sacrifice quality for savings? I'm going with a third metaphor. After Brent and Karina--" You're a hard act to follow"
Bubba six pack January 04, 2014 at 06:37 PM
"I've got a bone to pick" is my byline metaphor, but since I just spent the last 3 months in Karina's timeout chair, I'll go with "to err is human, to forgive is divine" I owe you one, Karina, for giving me so much line before you reeled me in. I'd say more, but I have more barbs than compliments, I have a reputation to uphold, and I need to stock up for the next editor.
Novato Native January 06, 2014 at 12:47 AM
Karina, Thank You! I appreciated all you did to keep "The Patch" of Novato alive and your efforts in finding some great pieces to share with the community. I like Novato, have lived here most of my life, and have always enjoyed our "community" feel. Although I am happy for you and your new opportunity, I am somewhat disappointed that we don't already have another editor in place for a "warm hand-off". I get the feeling you gave good notice and frankly, I have admired your thick skin through all of the comments people have made that crossed the line between "comments" on stories on "personal attacks". At times I was pretty embarassed at the way some acted as we are supposedly neighbors or of the same community. We really should be kinder as a community. As the saying goes "what doesn't kill us will make us stronger" and the picture of you high up on a hill is "fitting" for all that you have risen above while at "The Patch". Frankly, I think it is a shame the parent company doesn't at least make a three person team and include someone like an intern to do the police log, obits and coordinate BOD's or team/school reps for more simplistic articles, a salesperson to drive local revenues from businesses through advertising and then an editor like you to pull it all together. Maybe that misses the purpose of "The Patch" but you still did a good job managing everything in front of you and I Thank You for it! Best of luck!
