Cool Trek up to Big Tree

Escape the heat and head to the towering redwoods on Novato's Big Tree Trail.

When the summer is hot, the hiking is fine on the Big Tree Trail on Novato's west side. You can walk right along and touch the trees.

Even when it is 90 degrees you can enjoy this amazingly cool hike. The trails meander through the filtered light of bay, manzanita, oak and giant redwood trees. You are sure to see deer, banana slugs, birds and lizards.

Hike to the top and it is six miles round trip, or take a short stroll and view the sites along the way.

Bring a water bottle, snack and a camera to catch the gorgeous views when you make it to the top and sit underneath the circle of giant redwood trees.

To get to the trail, take Vineyard Road west to the end of the pavement. The trail will be on the left side of the road. Follow the Marin County Open Space markers on the trail. Enjoy!
